Perhaps you have special needs.Camping in a VW Camper Van for 25 years, usually with my wife and two children, we learned to pack wisely. Keep the weight and bulk to a minimum, and if it's going in the van, it'd better be functional. This 4" High, 8.5" Diameter 2 pound KEITH Titanium Portable Grill checks a few of those requirements. The high quality Titanium bowl, coal grate and grill should give years of trouble free and rust free service. But it's not perfect for everyone. In giving it a test run in the back yard, I kinda cheated. I started the charcoal with an electric charcoal starter inside my 22" home barbecue. Once the coals were started, I poured them into the bowl with the titanium coal grate already placed at the bottom. The grate is perfectly positioned to allow ventilation from the the ring of holes placed along the bottom of the bowl. With the good ventilation, the coals heated quickly and maintained good heat.Once the coals were ready, I used a long carving fork inserted into the grill to lift it into position on the bowl. The grill fits snuggly into the recess in the top of the bowl, it's set.Gave the grill several minutes to heat. Sprayed olive oil on each side of the uncooked burger. The burger seared immediately upon contact with the grill, just like you'd get from a cast iron frying pan.Once cooking, you have no control over the level of the heat. With a good steak or pork chop, it's nice to give them a quick very hot sear on each side, then adjust the heat down, cover the pan or barbecue, and cook slowly on each side for a few minutes. With this grill you won't be doing that. So, the grill does work. You may be challenged with the 8" diameter cooking surface.Backpacking, biking, motorcycle camping, or minimalist camping? You may be tempted to ditch the grill which weighs 19 ounces, bring the titanium bowl and coal grate (they weigh 13 ounces combined), and find yourself a lighter 8"-9" diameter barbecue top grill to use with it.When camping it may be easier to start your briquets or wood coals outside of the bowl, then place them in when lit, the small dimensions of the bowl will make if tight to get the coals started.Try to have some kind of stand for the bowl to raise it above whatever surface you're cooking on.You'll need a long fork, or something else that works, on hand to place your grill in position on the bowl full of hot coals. If you place them carefully, you could cook two burgers, a couple chicken breasts, or a couple well-trimmed steaks. When packed, there is empty space within the bowl, you could perhaps bring a small load of charcoal?Bon voyage.

This review, like the product, has multiple parts:The firebowl: The fire bowl and the air flow grate are both made of pure titanium. Very thin and shockingly lightweight, yet with good strength and durability you would expect from a quality steel, maybe even of a thicker gauge. The finish is smooth, it is easy to see that this high quality and will stand up to reasonable use. The grate is removable via two slits, which the Keith Titanium tongs fit perfectly into. Ideally, if you have this product, just pick up the tongs and stand as well, but it would be great if they were all bundled into one listing. Other than that quip, the firebowl and grate are excellent quality and live up to the standards the company passed when inspected. The grill: It is clearly not made of pure titanium, it has a different finish, texture, weight, everything about it is just a little off compared to the bottom. What this company alloyed the titanium with to produce this is beyond my pay grade, but it is effective, and it has all the benefits of titanium, with a reasonable amount of the cooking feel of cast iron. However, as others have stated, titanium is strong and lightweight, perfect for backpacking, which this set is clearly made for, and the nesting grill top is at least as heavy as the rest of the unit. The drawstring holder: It does a good job of keeping everything contained and reasonably in place, and feels quality, like a sturdy nylon or waxed canvas feel. The drawstring will do to keep the grill plate in place, though it has space to stow, say, a cleaning cloth to really secure it, there is a lot of room for the fire grate to bang around when being lugged in a pack. Loading it with kindling or charcoal would keep it in place.Summary: this is a great portable titanium firepit/grill combo for its size, suitable for one maybe two peoples cooking needs. The tongs are a necessity unless you happen to have a grill fork or tongs that also fit the slots of the grill plate and grate perfectly on hand, the stand can easily be improvised with canned food cans, soda cans, or other metallic miscellany. As an improvement, this kit could include the tongs and the stand, and whatever other products are essential or even a welcome addition to this one, and the customer could choose between just the grill, the grill and tongs, the grill, tongs and stand, etc.

I was pretty disappointed overall with this grill. The shell and fuel cover appear to be made from titanium however the cooking surface is heavy steel and easily weighs 2-3x that of the other components. The legs and tongs, which you need to remove cooking surface, are both sold separately so it didn’t feel like a particularly complete package. The build quality is rather good though and the pieces do fit together nicely but the method of operation left a bit to be desired and felt messy just tossing charcoal in and laying the flame shield on top of the bricks. It works well enough but then again so does my cheap metal portable grill so I’d be hesitant to recommend this unless you absolutely must have titanium.

You never know when it might be needed. It stores easily and compactly and can be used with twigs, wood, charcoal or whatever you have on hand that you can light.

Now my only charcoal grill for backpacking, my old backpacking grills don't come close to this. It's light, well made, and once I put hot coals in there it cooks evenly- no hot spots.I only wish that it came with a stand, because as it is, I always have to put it on the grate of the fire pits at the camp grounds that I go to. It would be great if a bundle option were available with the grill tongs and stand. As it is, I make do with whatever I can find around the site.Is it worth the price? Yes. It's going to last a lifetime, and wear well. I have a few Keith titanium items, and they all are in great condition despite being used and tossed around in my camping journeys. Would recommend.
