High Fidelity Audio

Tone2 utilizes the powerful XMOS XU208 processor with 8 cores & 8 threads for high performance bit-perfect decoding. Decode up to 768KHz PCM and DSD 512 (Native) audio files and enjoy digital master quality audio.

4

High Performance ESS DAC

Tone2 has been engineered for audio perfection. The powerful ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip is paired with two TI OPA1612 operational amplifiers and two Ricore RT6862 operational amplifiers.

5

Precise Clock Management

Various audio components are carefully arranged on Tone2’s PCB layout. Two Accusilicon AS318-L series, active crystal oscillators with low phase noise and low jitter and one SiTime SiT8209 high performance active crystal oscillator at 100M enhance the low noise characteristics. The phase jitter is controlled within 0.5ps and the frequency drift is only ±10PPM. This ensures that the time interval of each sample is more stable, so that the analog audio signal can be returned more clearly.

7

Selecting Power Supply

Tone2 is powered by USB-C (USB) or I2S (Linear Power Supply), with a power path management chip from Texas Instruments. Power selection is easy.

* Linear power supplies require a Khadas-designed USB-C cable, which will be available soon.

7

Multiple Input/Output Methods

Tone2 has multiple I/O interfaces on its compact chassis. Input: USB, S/PDIF, Bluetooth (w/ BT Magic) Output: Balanced RCA, Single-end RCA

With Tone2, you will have the freedom to switch between a variety of audio input and output sources easily.

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD+N):

Balanced RCA: -118dB Single-end RCA: -116dB

Maximum DAC Line-Output:

Balanced RCA: 4Vrms@200KΩ Single-end RCA: 2Vrms@100KΩ

These DIY Tone DAC boards are great to use in DIY projects. At the time Khadas released the Toneboard 1 (TB1, 2019), it was a hit and blew away many of commercial DAC. For its price point, feature set, and sound quality, it simply could not be beat. Over the past few years, I have used 3 TB1 in various DACs and small streamers. They have all performed extremely well, and I could always count on the quality of sound they delivered. Then a couple years ago, Khadas released an upgrade - the Toneboard 2 (TB2). This was offered as two different products, a finished unit in a nice, super small, package. The consumer version allowed a user to connect up there source using a USB-C connection for power and signal, add an external amplifier, or headphones, and your good to go. Even the specs were notched up a bit in the newer TB2, and it sounded great. The TB2 even had offered balanced output using a new RCA plug Khadas designed that was backward compatible with normal RCA output connectors.Eventually, Khadas released a sort of 'bare bones' addition of the TB2 for the DIY community called the Toneboard 2 Maker Kit. I picked a couple of these on Amazon for $119, to use in my new upcoming DIY DAC/Streamer projects. Admittedly, the normal turn-dial of the TB2 is more difficult to ujse, but once you set it you can forget it. I typically never used the dial, so for my projects it was winner. I very seldom used headphones. You still got all the advantages of the TB2, without the extra cost. More recently, I picked up a TB1, for a friend's project at $69USD. Bargain of all bargains.Truly, either of these are value projects and worth looking at if you like to tinker and build external DACs and streamers. Recommended.
