I purchased this to repair the steering on a Craftsman PYT 9000, 50 inch riding mower. I was unsure of what parts needed to be replaced, but turned out it was only the pinion gear that attaches to the end of the steering column was worn and the bushing that sits in the frame for the steering column. The bushing was worn the worst. These seem to be the most too frequently worn out pieces.Since I purchased the entire gear plate, I decided to replace it anyway in case there was unseen wear, or in case the new gear did not fit properly with the factory gear plate.Comparing the old with the new, it was a new exact match, and all the holes and slots lined up perfectly. I understand that many of these mowers manufactured by Murray share parts with cub cadet, and others, so there shouldn’t be a lot of variance between them.If you’re replacing factory parts, some of the bolts will be very difficult to break loose. I recommend draining the gas from the mower and putting it up on its back wheels securely so that you can get to the entire underside. Or use a lift designed for mowers. Some of the bolts are a little precarious to get to if you’re working off the ground. You may also want to consider replacing the steering arms because the ball socket mechanisms at the front wheel tend to get quite a bit of play in them with older mowers.Installation took about two hours and after realigning the front wheels and testing, the steering was close to a new feel. The steering on these mowers is pretty crude so there’s not very many adjustments or tolerance.Overall, I’m happy with the purchase, but will start with the gear and the bushings before I replace the entire plate again. Should last a few years at least.
