I replaced the parts due to loose steering, which is fairly typical of any older mower. I had play due to worn gears, but also had play due to wear on the upper steering column bracket. Fortunately I was able to weld a bushing onto the upper bracket (part is no longer available from JD) to stabilize the upper end of the steering column. Between the new steering plate, gear and welding in an off-the-shelf bushing, my lawnmower drives like it's brand new!

Had to replace steering sector and pinon gear on my John Deere La135. Does the job, will see how long the parts last from use. Found a you- tube video to show only to do it. Have to watch out when removing the steering plate, the tie rods are easy to damage. Ended up replacing them also
