Trying to revive a dead lawn &needed an aerator for better seed germination. The assembly of this aerator was frustrating because the nuts would not tighten with the tiny wrenches provided. I ended up using a ratchet and it was fine. The handle feels a little wobbly where that assembly. The holes it makes are evenly distributed& sharp. Pushes right into the ground with ease. Works well and cant wait see what a difference this makes for germination.

I got this in the hope that it would work better for me than a plug type aerator that I have, and it looks like I got what I was hoping for.Pro:* Easier to use than a plug type aerator (one that removes dirt plugs.) The main thing that makes it easier is that it doesn't clog. With my other aerator, it clogged so often and was so hard to unclog that I rarely used it. I will use this. Thus, even though spike aeration isn't as effective as removing plugs, on the whole, my lawn is going to be better off. The other thing that makes it easier is that it covers more ground at a time that my two-hole plug aerator.* The height of the handle is just right. (I'm 5'11" -- if you are several inches taller, it might possibly be a little short for you, and if you're several inches shorter, it might start to feel too long...but I suppose I should leave that for taller and shorter people to say.)* The spikes seem sturdy (more on that below.)Neutral:* As mentioned above, spike aeration isn't as effective as plug removal, because removing plugs creates space for the dirt to get looser, but poking holes with a tool like this doesn't. This is not a flaw in the product, just a difference between aeration methods.* As other reviewers have mentioned, the handle assembly is a little wobbly. Personally, I don't care -- it doesn't seem to affect performance. But if you want a tool whose handle feels totally solid, this might be a drawback for you.Con:* When I first started using it, I was wiggling the handle from side to side while pushing in in order 1) to help me get it all the way in, and more importantly, 2) to try to create larger, looser holes in the lawn. As you can see in the attached photo, I soon noticed that the place where the parts of the handle connect was getting bent by this process. (Notice how it's flared out a little.) Once I noticed this, I altered my method of wiggling the unit. Instead of stepping on the middle and wiggling the handle, I step on one side and then the other. So far, I haven't seen any of the spikes getting bent by this process, so I think it should work for me. But a more robust handle would be a plus.On the whole, I'm pretty happy with it because my lawn definitely needs aeration, and it's easy enough to use that I will actually use it.

I was a little uncertain how good this would be when it arrived. It felt a bit lighter than I was expecting. It arrived in a surprisingly small box thanks to the way it was designed for assembly. I was very pleased with how well it was packaged, including some creative packing around the spikes. Setup was super easy - just two bolts for attaching the 3 pieces. Two small wrenches are included, which was a nice touch, but I opted to use my heavier Craftsman wrenches, which made the job a bit easier. It felt a little more substantial when it was put together, but it is still not hefty.I am currently overseeding my lawn for winter and have super dense Bermuda grass roots that go down several inches below the surface soil. I have a rolling aerator tool that I've tried in the past, and it was virtually impossible to penetrate the soil with that thing. This aerator worked pretty well. With little effort, I can create shallow holes that are perfect for seeding but less ideal for true aeration. Standing on the aerator helped, but that alone was not enough to penetrate the dense Bermuda roots. However, by simply rocking slightly back & forth, the spikes easily went full-depth. My soil is mostly on the damp/dry side, and I had no problem at all removing the spikes cleanly. They stick some - not much - in areas where the soil is a bit moister. It works surprisingly well, and I am kicking myself for not getting this (or something like it) sooner.I do wish that the footprint was larger so that you could cover more ground more quickly. Though my front & back yards are small, it will still take some time. Secondly, it would be great if they included one additional segment for the handle to reduce bending. I'm not that tall, so it is not a huge issue for me, but if you're more than 5'10", your back might get a decent workout.

Once assembled, it could be a good product but due to shoddy construction it was wobbly at best.It comes with 2 nuts/bolts and 2 cheap wrenches to put together the sectional tubing that connects the T-handle to the actual unit. We used our own tools because using the supplied cheap wrenches was just impossible. Even though we tightened the bolts/nuts as far as they could go, the assembly was still wobbly. Assembly and cheap build of the tubing and connectors loses two points for us right there. This should not be the case for something priced at $39.99.Once assembled, despite being wobbly, it does get the job done. The design of the 15-pin spike unit is such that you can push it deeper into the ground with your foot (like you would with a shovel)... so someone who weighs at least 150 lbs is likely to get better results than someone 120 lbs or less... especially in our yard where the soil is a bit harder/denser than average. This does work better than many of those 'other' units that strap onto your shoes. If it weren't for the shoddy construction of the tubing/connectors it would be a 5-star rating. However because of that AND the $39.99 price for that type of construction, 3 stars is being generous.
