Bought for 4yo but every kid that encountered it wanted to play. If you plan to give to a younger kid, be sure to read the manual first. It is only instant play if you're in the right setting and can explain how it works.

I have several of the 1.0 robots, and the kids really enjoy them. This one was a test to see about replacing those and the robot often won't pair with the remote and then when it does it won't stay connected. It's very frustrating for the kids. I had already thrown away the package based on our experience with the 1.0 robots, but if I hadn't I would have returned this one. Don't think I'll replace the other ones anytime soon.

This is a great 'learning' robot and our kids love it. Very sturdy and able to take a good knock, it keeps them interested when learning to program the toy.The robot however does not have a 'free control' setting which lets you play with it like a remote control car... in stead it has to follow pre-programmed route which the child needs to input via the remote control. This is no problem in itself as it develops the childs thinking skills as to where and how the robot needs to be programmed to go a particular route, but a free driving setting would have been a bonus so they could just whizz it about on the floor trying to avoid obstacles without having to program it beforehand.

1st Botley (gen 1): forward arrow on remote doesn’t work.2nd Botley (gen 1): line follow mode doesn’t work (Botley spins in circles; changes to line thickness, lighting, etc. don’t resolve the issue).3rd Botley (upgrade to more costly gen 2 thinking maybe they worked out some kinks in the manufacturing): line follow doesn’t work… again.Two really irritating things: 1) the gen 2 Botley is more expensive and comes with less accessories; 2) this thing is meant for kids which makes consistently defective products SUPER disappointing, not to mention that young kids don’t handle unsolvable problems (e.g., defective products) well.Way to gently introduce kids to coding :-(Capital BOO to this product.

The robot noises were cute but remote doesn’t work at all. Very disappointed. Bought as a gift for my granddaughter and now stuck with some thing that is useless

I purchased this toy for my daughter who just turned 5. She absolutely loves playing with Botley and the coding is very straightforward and easy for her to understand. She loves that she is able to program different codes to turn Botley into a frog, train, ghost and more. I love that she is able to learn how to program things in a sequence and use if/then logic when playing. This is a great toy for children who love to learn about technology, and I love that it's a screen free activity that encourages children to use their thinking cap and imagination during play time!
