This knitting book is wonderful. There are very unusual patterns, but I love the unusual. They are sophisticated and very pretty. Many are for Intermediate to Experienced knitters so keep this in mind. The pictures and patterns are all well laid out and easy to read. Very happy with this book and looking forward to starting one of the patterns.

Light and Layered Knits contains some lovely patterns for warm weather wear or for layering. Most of the patterns are cardigans or pullover sweaters and they are knit with lightweight yarn. There are nineteen patterns in the book and several of them are ones I'd be interested in knitting. There are contemporary designs and classics, lace and aran. The author is very well-known for The Knitter's Companion, her small 'bible' of knitting questions and answers, a how-to book for every knitter. In this book she demonstrates her design abilities.I love the first pattern in the book entitled Renaissance. It has a fifteenth century look in a simple pullover. It reminds me a bit of Jade Starmore's designs. The Tuscany Lace is breathtakingly beautiful. It is a pullover knit in shades of gray with a fair isle rib. Skin is "revealed through the open horizontal slit between the yoke and the lower tunic, offering visual balance between the two textures." This really works. Kathmandy, in a bright red is a pullover with lovely embroidery on the top front. The author states that it is inspired by Indian clothing and I can see that in the pattern. Origami flower is a sleeveless pullover with stripes and solids on the front. I can see this as a perfect work adornment for the career woman. I immediately fell in love with Bold Aran, a turquoise v-neck pullover with aran cables down the middle. Knit with soysilk yarn, I imagine it will be nice and light. The Less-is-More-Tee is a classic tee with just enough texture on the bottom, neck and sleeves to make it interesting. Celtic Queen also has a Jade Starmore quality to it. It is tight-fitting with a dash of the Celtic in its design. The very short sleeves are cabled and the body of the shirt is primarily stockinette. It utilizes a silk tape yarn and I bet it feels yummy on the skin. These are the patterns that most interested me but I think there is something in this book for everyone. With most knitting books I ask myself three questions:Are there patterns in the book that I will knit? Are the patterns easy to read?Is the book a good resource? The answer to the first two questions is yes. Questions three is debatable. The book is great eye candy and that should be enough as it will give you loads of fun to look through and lots of good ideas.

Many design collections have only one or two patterns that the reader actually wants to create; not so with Light and Layered Knits, which features many wonderful designs with a contemporary sensibility from the clearly innovative to the quieter classics. This book is a keeper. The lace mini-dress with the separate yoke that graces the cover was the reason I bought the book, but there are several other garments in the book that beg to be made and worn from the zip front jacket with military and motorcycle styling to the mosaic sweater. Plain classics in the form of knit tees and long-sleeved pull-overs are more than just re-treads of classics thanks to elegant lines, body conscious fit and sleek yarns. The yarns used in the garments are primarily cotton and cotton and bamboo mixes to keep with the light and layered weight of the title, but as standardized yarn weights are provided throughout, these good be made in wool and wool blends if desired.Construction techniques are fairly standard and mostly involve separate pieces that need to be blocked and seamed. Exceptions are the motorcycle jacket and a shell that involves a cable that runs through the entire shell, forms a halter and has the two pieces of the front attached to it. This strikes me as requiring advanced blocking and finishing techniques if the final garment is to hang and look right. Other than that, the confidant intermediate knitter should be able to manage the patterns as written.Directions looked very clear and well written to me and included charts and schematics as well as written instructions and generous photographs of the garments with many different views. For visual learners this is a boon. I am very impressed with Light and Layered Knits and think the author has an interesting design aesthetic. I definitely want to make more than one of the designs presented. The book also inspired me in terms of using cotton and bamboo yarns to greater effect. A winner and a welcome addition to any knitters library who wants to knit contemporary garments with classic lines.
