This carrier is slightly bigger than a transfer cage, and is very sturdy to boot. It does not open from the top, but then I didn't want it to. All the pieces were there for carrier assembly, and it went together easily. I've already had a TNR cat use it in his holding cage as a hidey-hole, and if he had thumbs, he'd likely give it a thumbs-up.
