I ordered these to add to my shop tool set and although I was initially excited to use them, I quickly realized that they are not at all heavy-duty bits. It did OK in a plastic fender liner I used on first. A thin metal hole proved to be a bit more of a challenge. I don't think it'll go through more than a 1/16" thick, soft metal. Otherwise, these will do in a pinch.

I've got some other step drill bits but this one is my go to for deep drilling for smaller holes in tight spaces. Stands up to standard use. I've only drilled into wood with this, but I'm sure you could do other materials. It performed well and didn't take a whole lot of pressure to penetrate the work material.

This is a well made step bit that is sharp and made of hard steel that does not bend or shear with the metal I use it on. I had other brands that broke with metal, and I can't have that, because that's primarily what I used these for. I like the clear measurements on each step. The spiral does help better cutter speed as it seems to clear material better.

Nice laser engravings, sharp out if the box but when used side by side with a similar step drill bit from a well known inexpensive tool store, this one took longer to get through and enlarge a pre-drilled hole in 1/4in flat stock. It did do the job and it showed negligible wear on its cutting edge. But it went up against a step drill that I've had around for years and has been used at least several times on steel. That being said if it's used occasionally on metal it could still be in your tool drawer for quite a while and still effectively do it's job. At the price it's being offered it's worth the purchase price just to have it around simply because sometimes nothing else will work.

If you've never used a step bit you be surprised by their versatility. Great for field or shop work. I like to keep a set in my tool bag for use in the field. If you are careful and take your time this is a very useful tool. The steps are clearly marked and the groove makes fast work cutting through different materials. The price is on point and much cheaper than hardware store choices. This one might not last as long as expensive bits (not sure yet) but at this price you won't freak out if you loose one.

I have looked at these for quite some time and finally got one. These are great for drilling larger holes and especially if you have differing sizes or non-standard sizes. These won't replace my hole or spade bits, but it surely compliments them. Especially when drilling in metal or plastic.I do recommend and I will buy this again.
