The magnet threads onto the back. The back has holes. Dust and muck will get in through the holes. Not recommended for metalworking environment with oils and coolants.

This is a good addition to the dial indicator tool box as it adds versatility to the mounting locations . The magnet is quite strong, will not dance around due to vibration. I'v seen some similar ones at work where the plastic has split, perhaps from oil or coolant, we'll see. However at this price you could buy a new one.

Unlike some magnetic bases, the indicator will set parallel to the surface it is attached to.

Strong mag. Low profile and easy indicator assembly!

Had to put a flat washer on it because the plastic back as too much fle. I put it on a mitutoyo dial indicator and it has the right hole pattern but is a larger diameter so it doesn't fit own in the recess on the indicator. Seems to work okay so far.
