Many people try to local wall studs for picture hanging by knock on the wall until it sounds right. I have a drawer full of battery-operated Stud Finders which detect density behind the drywall. If I happen across a wall stud, a light signal occurs. However, it does not tell me where the center of the stud is. This little Red plastic encased magnet-driven stud finder is low tech and ACCURATE. Simply hold it by the looped end with the red plastic side against the wall (if you put the metal side to the wall, it may mark the wall) and drag it left to right. You may have to raise or lower the stud finder to a different level but eventually you will come near a nail or screw in a stud. The powerful 27 lb. pull magnet encased in the plastic will grab on to the area where the metal is. (In the picture my stud finder is literally hanging on the wall by its magnet.) Since most people nail into the center of a stud, just determine the point directly above where the magnet grabbed onto your wall to attach your nail/picture hanger. If you find one stud, remember most other studs are 16 inches apart from each other. This is the no-nonsense way to find a wall stud. No batteries required. Everyone needs one.

This product is a very low tech but extremely functional tool for locating nails (and therefore studs) in your wall. I've tested some high tech electronic devices costing ten times as much that are less effective. This simple product uses a very powerful magnet wrapped around a small silicone "holster" that you can slowly move across a wall. When it locates a nail it simply sticks to the wall! It's very small and lightweight and just hangs on the wall so you can mark the spot before moving on. Ingenious device. Highly recommended for locating studs behind your sheetrock walls.

I ordered this to remove a piece of my sliding door lock that fell through all the way down to the bottom while trying to install it. It worked!! And, honestly, for finding studs, this is so much easier and simpler than my electronic stud finder. There are no icons to figure out and confuse me, and it does the same thing at a lesser cost.

Very simplistic item to help in finding where studs are especially pretty close to the center. Magent has a good pull too.
