I am just a home owner and bought this for occasional tree/branch trimming. If you are a professional wondering how this would handle 8 hours a day, every day use, my review is not for you.I have the Makita 2 battery (36V) head unit, an extension and the chainsaw. All three pieces put together, it is long and reaches far. You do need some muscle to handle all three pieces, not something grannie will be using to keep her tree's nice. I had a picture of it all assembled, but of course I can't find it now. For guys it's does look very "cool".Used it to trim some branches on big tree's by the road that were getting a little too close. Rather do it myself before the county came around and butchered everything. They were almost all big oak tree's. This chainsaw cut them all, even thick limbs with no problem. Very impressed. Ripped through them well. I'll be looking for branches to cut, just because it's fun to use. And I can build some muscle at the same time.I can't tell you how it would stand up to day long, heavy abuse, but for me, occasional use, it's awesome. Very happy I bought it and highly recommend.

So I converted all of my outdoor tools to Makita using the power coupler, and let me say, the results have been amazing. This pole saw is a beast! It isn't all that heavy (I'm by no means a small guy so this might be a biased statement) and it cuts like a full chainsaw. I am cutting trees down that are over a foot in diameter using this thing and it powers through. I know that isn't what it was meant for, and it does eat up the battery doing that, but it is sharp and strong. It does choke out if the blade goes any direction but straight to save the blade and attachment, and it will need to be started BEFORE you begin your cut or it will also choke out, but I don't really even see that as a con. Long story short, if you have a power coupler, and need a great pole saw, this is the one to get.

I have a Stihl and Husqvarna and have used them extensively.....I am done with gas saws. I paired this with the powerhead and an extension and it is quiet, lightweight and cuts fast.Only one weird issue. The 10" Makita chain they sent was too small. No way is it going on the bar. Luckily I purchased an Oregon 10" extra and it went right on.One year later. Use the batteries for my Makita blower throughout the year. Tried to use this chain saw one year later and keeps shutting down. Basically useless. The batteries work fine with my blower.

This thing is probably more power than I need for palm trees, but I already have other Makita tools and I don't want to use gas powered stuff for home use, so this was the perfect fit. Just don't use this to edge a lawn and make sure you keep it free of debris after each use so it doesn't clog and jam up on you. Wish it was a bit cheaper, but other wise its a great buy. Replacing the blade is a pain, but if you need to I bought the "Oregon S39 AdvanceCut 10-Inch Semi Chisel Chainsaw Chain", right here on Amazon and it works fine.

This makes my old trimmer plus-style gas powered pole saw look like a cheap toy. You pay for it though. It is up to you to decide if its in the budget or not, but most assuredly the Makita system is on another level. The attachment mechanism is secure and sturdy and the drive shaft heavier. The bar and blade are nice -- Oregon I believe -- and the system cuts well. It does not seem under powered in any way. I also use the Makita extension.Depending on your needs, physical stature, age or whatever, you may wish to use a harness. I did not use one in the past with my gas power head, but found the Makita a little more physically demanding due to weight. With a harness I find the the system can be used for longer time and more securely.Recommended if you want a capable pole saw that will last a long time, and you have a compatible Makita power head.

I've used Makita products for 30 years now starting with a corded drill. They've always designed durable tools; I've never had one to fail. This pole saw along with the battery powered power head work well for my needs on wooded land. I'm able to cut limbs while standing on a hillside, and reach into the middle of the nasty multi-flora rose to fell the whole mess in little time. It's fairly solid equipment that I suspect a professional landscaper might use, but I'm not a professional so I can't say for sure. I noticed one review that mentioned the need to spin up the saw r.p.m. before it makes contact with the wood. That's true, and it's the nature of a brushless motor, but I've had no problems with stalling yet when cutting through cherry, maple, multi-flora rose, or oak.

I just spent my first day with this pole saw and the new for 2018 electric Makita powerhead. Wow. Not only will I never need to use a chainsaw on a ladder again #FailArmy but I’m definitely on the path to retiring my gas can. This tool easily dispatched with 5” maple and oak limbs, cutting both along the top and bottom of the bar to get clean cuts without binding. I’m eagerly awaiting the 42” extension so that I can extend my reach. It’s not too heavy, and the tool is well balanced at the unextended length. I suspect that the added weight of the extension will improve the downward force into the cut, though it may make the relief cuts on the bottom side of branches a little more difficult. The only negative at the time of this writing is that the chain, Oregon 91VXL039X, is not a standard part. Time will tell if it becomes available. If not, I imagine your local chainsaw shop can make up a suitable replacement. The 91VXL chain is the more aggressive of Oregon’s narrow kerf chain, which I highly recommend as an upgrade on Makita’s also-excellent new dual LXT chainsaw, if you’re willing to be careful about kickback, which hasn’t been a problem for me.Update 2025: still going strong! The only challenge is that you can’t store it vertically, or else the bar and chain oil leaks out.
