Difference of AC CDI & DC CDI
- AC CDI: The CDI Obtains it voltage solely form the current produced by the stator and is one of the most widely used basic in small engines
- AC CDI : on the two plug part of the unit will always have 2 wire generally a black/red=stator power a white/black = engine kill
- AC CDI ：scooter engine will run without a battery or on a dead battery
- DC CDI: The DC CDI module is powered by the battery so an additional DC/AC inverter circuit is needed in the module to step up the voltage from 12VDC to a range 400-600VDC
- DC CDI: Is a lager unit due to the additional circuit and engine running with a DC-CDI set-up have a more precise timing and generally start better when the engine is cold.
- DC CDI: on most scooter is a 4 wire set-up but has been known a 5 wire set-up also, the sure way to know is to check its power source.
Mechanics Note on distinguishing AC fired or DC fired CDI box :
Wire and Plug
- In the GY6 6-plug set-up, you have AC if you have 3-wires going into the 4-plug side and you have 2-wires going into the 2-plug side.
- On the other hand, you have DC if you have the larger CDI box, 3 or 4 wires going into the 4-plug side and only 1 wire going into the 2-plug side.
AC And DC Size
- In general, the DC CDI's tend to be larger in size than the AC ones.
Headlights
- if the headlights turn on without the engine running, (with just the key on), it is a DC system.
- In the AC system the headlight requires the engine to be running. Another indication is, if the engine will only run with a battery it is DC. If it will run without a battery, it is a AC system.

A part needed for a AC to DC conversation. You will need to de-pin the power wire to wire up correct. Used on an IceBear MadDog Gen IVBut only 3 stars because it did not remove rev limits. And would cut spark at WOT.

Awesome aftermarket cdi box I installed it on my carbide 150cc gokart , plug and play cdi box is alittle big so I had to find a different place to install it but definitely gave the gokart alittle more kick

Loved the performance. But after 2 small rides the box quit. Tested it with a multimeter and it has shorts in it. Just buy oem.

After trying a bunch of cheap knockoffs, this one worked as advertised for DC ignition. Producing spark as it should. Adjustable timing would be a nice feature to add to the product.
