Call me old-fashioned but I still find good use for a portable CD player and radio. I was finding it hard to part with my old ones, despite the too-large footprints. Enter this little red number.The Memorex MX-BCD20 brings back the charm of classic CD players while incorporating some modern conveniences.Pros:Audio Quality: The sound is clear and robust, suitable for both music and spoken word content. Maybe not as great as my old Sony machine but also 1/3 the size.Functionality: Supports CD-R/RW playback and includes an AM/FM tuner.Portability: Lightweight, compact design with a sturdy handle makes it easy to move around the house or take on the go.Connectivity: Auxiliary input allows for connecting external devices like MP3 players or smartphones.Cons:Power Options: Operates on AC power or batteries, but the battery compartment requires multiple C-size batteries, which can be cumbersome. I don't anticipate running it on batteries, so this isn't an issue.Display: The LCD is basic and lacks backlighting, making it hard to read in low-light conditions. But that's minor.Build Quality: While generally sturdy, some components feel a bit plasticky and may not withstand heavy use. This is to be expected for the price. I tend to treat electronics gently.Overall Impression:I find this a solid choice for strolling down memory lane with my CD collection, with the added benefit of radio and auxiliary input. I was a bit disappointed when I saw how small this boombox was. Then again, I grew up in a time when the bigger the boombox you brought to school, the cooler you were. This one would have been a joke. I do like the red color and the rounded design. It’s fine to bring on a camping trip, to the beach or out to the backyard where portability is your main priority.The unit was able to tune in a lot of AM and FM stations—more than any other radio I own, but it seems to have a difficult time locking onto a station unless it’s very strong. The tuning dial is extremely sensitive. Barely touch it and you’ve passed three different stations before you know it. Considering how short the antenna is, the range is impressive.The cd player works as expected with the normal functions. This is where you’ll get the best sound. I connected my mp3 player via an AUX cable I had and that worked well, but the mp3 player doesn’t have the power to boost the volume and it’s lower than I would like. As for sound, the speakers are small and have no adjustments. It’s not bad, but gets muddy playing music with many layers. Still better than I expected at this price point.The only downside is as others mentioned, the writing on the buttons is hard to see. The switch on the side only has raised letters. They might as well not be there at all. I may run a black marker over the letters to make them stand out better.

The sound on this player is very basic. The whole thing is very basic, but it sounds okay. The labels on the buttons were white in the item picture, but they are actually a grey color making them hard to see on the red background. It works as expected, but it is, as I said, very basic. If you are expecting sound like you would expect from a modern speaker, you will be disappointed. It is more mono than sterio...more like 80's sound quality.

I was hesitant to try this, even with the perceived advantage of being a recognizable brand name with a warranty, but was surprised at the value this offers for the price. I have ton of CD's, all ripped for MP3 player use, but there are times when its nice to have a portable radio and CD-player. This is small, uses C cells (which is good, as some smaller units like this use AA batteries which don't last as long) and has decent sound quality. No, its not wonderful sound quality with deep bass but is actually very respectable, with good range and not tinny at all. I suspect the space around and behind speakers in this particular enclosure helps a lot. For the price it is better than some portable speakers I have purchased for twice as much. And it has an Aux input that I tried with my MP3 player ( a repurposed old smartphone) and that is a nice plus.Radio reception is good, the handle is unobtrusive and the front controls are logically laid out. The only negative I have, not significant at this price point, is that the side control wheel for station tuning is basically something you will use by listening to stations as they zip by, as the station numbers are tiny and hard to read. (Opinion: For pennies more a digital tuner chip might have been used, but that would raise the price and this is a good value for personal use or as a gift without digital tuning, so just turn the wheel and listen to the stations until you get what you want.) As I looked around at Big Box stores, for this price, and for the decent sound (NOT tinny at all!) for $26, this is a solid purchase if you want a portable CD player with AM/FM, sound quality and reception is more than acceptable and for the price I am more than satisfied. And you cannot misplace anything this shade of red.
