Perfect Shimano Sora 9 speed upgrade from 11-34 to this 11-42, going any higher than 42 would be unusable. The 2nd gear is now 34, so it rides pretty close to the way it used to, just has this additional 42T gear to help out on the long climbs. My crankset is 32/48, and there isn't enough chain for the 48 + 42, but you don't need it. Going to stay in 32 on the front, actually going to change it to a 1x9 with 32T on the front and this 11-42T cassette on the back. Perfection :)Note: The only adjustment I needed to make on my derailleur was to crank the B screw in as far as it would go, and fine tune the indexing using the barrel screw on the cable.

I converted an old hybrid to a 1x9 using this groupset and am pretty happy with the performance. It definitely has a loud mechanical click compared to the other Shimano shifters but that's a minor gripe. The setup was very straightforward and fine tuning was quick and simple. I came from a 3x8 and needed to add spacers to the front chain ring for a better chain line otherwise it made it very noisy and difficult shifting to the largest cog. I would recommend this groupset to others looking for a cheap 1x upgrade.
