The box didn't arrive in the best shape, but the trainer was in tact! I didn't realize how lightweight this thing is. It says it's made of nylon, but it feels like plastic. Either way, for what it needs to do, it sure beats spending 3 times as much on a silver plated brass version. After taking a 20+ year hiatus from trumpet, I started to play again, but I wanted things to be different this time. I used to struggle to play consistently around high-C and my endurance was barely adequate for gigs; hence, I put aside everything my teachers incorrectly taught me in high school and college (more air to go higher, tight corners, flat chin) and delved into the mechanics of proper buzzing, mouthpiece placement, focused air, and most importantly the tongue). Hence, step one was to use this "tool" to understand where my lips buzz within the mouthpiece. I won't get into what's right or wrong since every player's oral cavity, lips, tongue, etc. is different, but what this handy little thing taught me is where I can place the mouthpiece for the most efficient, quality buzz (btw - for me it's not where I have it placed in the last pic). When I first tried this trainer, it showed me that I was not only a downstream player (that means I placed the mouthpiece higher on my upper lip than lower), but also that I place too much mouthpiece on the red fleshy part of my lips. That explained why my lips (being squeezed by teeth and mouthpiece pressure causing loss of blood flow) quickly fatigued and would then collapse into the mouthpiece. What I learned from this "nylon tool" in combination with other research and diagnosis has been invaluable in my comeback journey! So while this is a cheap, it's functional.... even fits into the lead pipe if that's what you want it for.
