The Micro Mini Media Converter smoothly converts data between Gigabit Ethernet and fiber optic networks by using advanced switching technology. It complies with IEEE802.3, IEEE802.3u, IEEE802.3z,and IEEE802.3ab standards and enables two types of network connections: 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T, and 100/1000Base-X. This device exchanges electrical signals from 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T twisted pairs with optical signals from 100/1000Base-SX/LX. It supports transmissions in multi-mode dual-fiber,single-mode dual-fiber, and single-mode single-fiber setups. When connected to a computer via USB, the media converter automatically shuts down when the computer is turned off, enhancing energy efficiency. This compact device is a perfect solution for fiber- to-the-laptop applications that need Gigabit fiber connectivity, particularly when local power sources are not available.

My test setup:Laptop 1: i5-1235U with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) TB4 capability.Laptop 2: i3-8145U with USB-C 3.0 (aka 3.1 Gen 1) (5 Gbps) PD capability.Control:2.5 Gbps USB-C adapters directly connected through 10ft. Cat6 cable, an RJ45 coupler, and a 3 inch Cat6 jumper (Manual IP assigned, Auto-MDIX, Firewalls disabled). Iperf 3.1.3 results = 2.14 Gbps throughput on multiple tests…i.e. confirmed faster than these.Test:After the direct wire test, I immediately replaced the RJ45 coupler with this converter (with an RJ45 SFP module previously confirmed at ~950Mbps), and re-ran the speed test: ~950Mbps. These claim 1Gbps and seem to have a 5% overhead…outstanding. I’ve had the fortune to test a handful of media converters and SFP modules at this point (Thanks Vine!) and have noted that: 1. Whether 1Gbps, or 1.25 Gbps claim, these converters/modules generally and consistently perform close to 950Mbps…so at 1G claim, this converter seems more truthful. 2. I can’t discern performance between the converters and the modules as I haven’t yet acquired/tested a combination that exceeds ~950Mbps.And the form factor of this one is smaller than many others…and USB-c powered. (Prior reviews of similar converters rejected for unknown reason…I suspect that AMZ has an issue with my iperf3 screenshots…even after path/ip masking…so omitting it from this review).So my opinion is that this is a good converter…and that 1Gbps is still plenty adequate for most residential, and many commercial (endpoint/access tier) applications…especially if you need an extended (>100m/300ft) or EMI impervious link.

Ran this and a bunch of others on speed and stability tests overnight, and the results were solid across the board. That's a good sign. Well built, well constructed. Only complaint I have is the lever latch on the included SFP sock is not well made, causing it to sink into itself and not lock properly. Solution is to gently push the square tab to either side until the locking tab sticks up properly, but the fact that I have to do this annoys me.
