About this item

  • Extend your router bits an additional 2-1/4-inch
  • Eliminates the dangerous temptation to withdraw the shank from the collet.
  • Use all diameters of 1/2-inch shank bits safely; use with 1/2-inch shank routers only

From the Manufacturer

Give your router bits an additional 2-1/4-inch when you extend them through the router table top with our router collet extension. Eliminate the dangerous temptation of withdrawing the shank from the collet in order to raise the bit and to provide the full depth of cut. The router collet extension makes it possible to use all diameters of 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch shank bits safely. Place the router collet extension shank in the 1/2-inch router collet and the router bit shank in the extension collet and tighten both. Instructions included. Use with 1/2-inch collet routers only.

This works well and is nicely made.

It's a bit confusing to stay with which direction to have your wood face & length on the angle cut in order for it to come out properly. However, I love this bit and the fact that 1 bit covers both sides of a frame.

This works as advertised. The machining is accurate, but edges and corners are not chamfered especially well. A very decent tool for the price. The collet has a rather large diameter that can make this extension useless if you are using smaller template guide bushings.

So I bought this device as I've had really good luck with MLCS router bits. They're a good company and their customer service is excellent. I needed an extension because I use my router mounted in a router table and I just didn't have enough travel in my set-up to keep my router bit shanks deep in the collet. This is a solidly built extension and I would recommend it based on my over 40 years of woodworking experience. That said, I gave it 3 stars for two reasons. One: I bought from Amazon because the price was a few bucks cheaper than their website. However, once I got it, I realized that it didn't come with the necessary wrenches. Since they are necessary I had to call MLCS and order the wrenches separately and ended up spending more than if I had just ordered the thing from their website, which included the wrenches. Two: Like most router collets, it does not release the bit when you first loosen it, you have to keep turning for a second release that allows the bit to come out. On my 3hp Dewalt's collet it works the same way, but on this collet, it actually loosens to the point where it pushes on the underside of the bit before it releases, sort of popping the bit out from the underside. I broke a couple of carbide bits before I realized what was happening and had to make a little wooden spacer to slide in between the collet and the bit when I 'm removing it so that a softer wood presses against the underside of the bit's carbide, preventing damage. It works but I shouldn't have to do that. In all fairness I haven't called them and asked them about the issue; once I figure out a fix to a problem I just sort of move on. Again, it's a well built device and I'll use it for years to come; I just think potential buyers should know it's limitations.

Works well when using router in a jig to flatten wood slabs. Allows you to avoid shims to raise slab when flattening. However you must take shallow passes removing less material.

I purchased the extender to use in flattening a live edge slab. I used it for about two hours on the project making about 6 passes over the slab. On the final pass the router suddenly started to vibrate violently. It gouged the piece in the process. I stopped and disassembled the collet extender and bit. I then ran the router and it ran smooth. I inserted the bit directly into the router and it had no vibration. I the reinserted the extender and it began to shake something awful. The extender hand developed a slight bend. Apparently it is not capable of the heat generated by use over anything but the shortest work. As a result i consider this a toy and not a serious tool.Unfortunately I am three days outside the Amazon return window so I suppose I will have to eat it. That is minor relative to the expensive slab I ruined. However it irks me that such inferior products are offered on Amazon.Unless you are a casual user who does not care to ruin your hard work, I recommend staying away from this piece of JUNK! Look elsewhere and buy quality.

This is a very well-made collet extension. It is heavy and well-machined. The one thing to remember is that the collet itself is going to stick out some so in my case, using a straight bit, I was able to go deeper with the cut, but had to back off the sides a little to clear the collet and then finish with a chisel. This is not a complaint- just something to consider. I should have gotten a wider flush trim bit to clear the collet on the end of the extension. It works, and works well, and it's well made. This was the cheapest one I found, and I couldn't ask for better quality. Keep in mind that since you are extending the bit, you need to take shallower cuts in order to put less pressure on the router collet. Fulcrum- it's a thing.

Made with precision, works great. May solve your problem when using a thick template, or a router that won't extend far enough upward, and /or too short of a router bit. Wrenches are not included with this particular extension, I have plenty. With all my reviews lately, I will indicate where the product is made if the company is honest enough to say. In the case of this extension, it does not say where it is "from". We can only assume ! That's the reason for four stars, and not five.
