String slots were perfect out of the package. Had to file off a couple mm on each and to fit a jazz bass neck.

The nut is solid, curved and pretty. But note that, depending on the guitar model (US, JPN, MEX, etc.) and year, the nut slot may have different dimensions. I got it for my 1989 Japan JazzBass and it was too low because the slot is cut pretty deep in the wood. So I used some piece of plastic, super glue and chisel to shim it up a little bit. Google first to find out how to do it properly. The nut was also too long (~1mm) and to thick (~.5mm) for my nut slot. So better have some sandpaper ready (1500, 2000) because you're gonna need it to shape the plastic. The spacing between the slots also turned out a little bit different, I don't mind it though. The conclusion is that you can go with this nut but you'll need some tinkering to make it work. It may work out–of–the–box for a new Fender JB (didn't test) but it's not 100% compatible with vintage basses. I guess that the standard nut design has simply changed over the years, so beware. Eventually, I ordered a genuine Fender part (004-8649-049) to check if it's better but it also required some work to fit it into my bass. It seems that, no matter which nut you buy, it'll take time to replace it in a vintage JB.

Received an acoustic guitar nut, not bass.

This is made for Fender Jazz basses, but the center-to-center spacing does not match original Fender specs. The slot spacing is cut significantly off from Fender OEM specs. So if you are looking for an exact drop-in replacement, look elsewhere.Further, the string slots come pre-cut too big for light gauge strings. If you use light strings, they will rattle and buzz horribly. Entirely unusable! And you cannot build up a string slot on a nut made from special material like a TUSQ. That defeats the purpose of buying it! If you use medium or heavy strings, you will be alright. If you use light strings, buy a nut blank and file it yourself because this one will be completely useless.I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because some people will still find it workable. But for anyone who wants a real OEM fit, or does not use heavy strings, you will be disappointed.Update: I did end up making this nut work, but it required some extreme modification. I essentially had to cut new string slots inside the pre-made slots and chamfer the hell out of the trailing edges (facing the headstock) of each slot. So I upped my rating to three stars. Still, the string spacing is different from Fender stock, but I can live with that. At least it works now, and surprisingly well.

I meant to get the Tusq XL, but got this one by mistake. You can't tell the difference in looking at them, so I used it anyway. It does sound better on a j bass that the standard plastic nut that came on it. Easy to grind down to fit correctly. If you've never changed out a nut before, but 2-3 at a shot, so you have an extra on hand when you screw it up. This is my second. I screwed up the first Tusq XL nut.

This nut is 1 9/16" wide, and the neck on a Fender Jazz bass is 1 1/2" wide. I saw this prior to ordering and *assumed* that string spacing would be correct and that the nut was over sized to allow shaping to meet the exact profile of the neck sides. Not so...this is a nut for a 1 9/16" wide neck with the correct string spacing (for a 1 9/16" neck)..on Fender jazz the E and G strings would be perilously close to the fretboard edge. Its simple, if you have a Fender Jazz bass, do NOT buy this nut

Graphtech makes great products but the difficulty with machined nuts is that they are made for one size nut slot. I tried to install this on my 1994 Fender Made in Japan Jazz Bass and discovered that the neck was quite a bit thinner than the Graphtech was machined for. I could have either installed and filed it so it would fit but then my string placement would have been off. Better to order an un-grooved nut and file to fit and file the string grooves yourself.

This item fit perfectly my jazz bass and it just needed minor adjustements to get the right height. The material i s very resitant and it wont break easily. The bright sound you can get from this nut is very cool and it will contribute to your bass tone in a possitive way. Recommended purchase.
