Part failed after only 9 months or 783 miles. Note bike is always stored in a garage. Cable has no signs of rust.

After only 3 days of use it snapped in half. I was lucky to get home when it happened a block from home. The staff was willing to replace the item so its just an inconvenience now. Stuff like this happens.
