I was changing the fork springs and oil on a 2000 Sportster 883C. As I was using aftermarket springs, I wanted to make sure that I was setting the fork oil level correctly. Generally, the blogs tell you to measure the amount of oil you take out and replace the same amount. The problem is the new springs have a different volume and it is difficult to capture all the old oil by yourself. This tool made it easy to ensure the oil was at the right level, 140 mm from top of fork, while the forks were compressed. Holding the ring in place and pully the syringe handle was a little tricky but nothing you can't overcome. The bike now handles like new.

There are basically two things here:1. There's a syringe with flexible hose you an use to inject fork oil into your forks. This works fine but unless you have a very small opening and need to use the hose it's much faster and easier to just use a little funnel on top of your fork tubes. So it's really not that useful.2. A metal ruler/rod to measure how much oil you have in your forks. Every service manual will say how much oil you should add to your forks. This is usually given as both a volume and a level. For example I used this on my 2014 Honda VFR800. It said to add 17.8 ounces of oil and this should result in a gap of 97mm between the oil level and the top of the fork tube. You put the measuring rod into the donut looking thing and clamp it in place. You then put the 'donut' on top of your fork tube to measure how much gap you have. It's a good idea but the measuring rod is hard to read. Since you're dealing with clean fork oil it's hard to tell where it contacts the oil. Making the rod black would of been better. Again, it works but just not as useful as it could be. I ended up using a funnel to add the oil and a good old fashioned small ruler to measure the level.
