As delivered it was not in new condition. It had clearly been previously opened and used. That's disgusting and a health hazard, given that this is a potable water filter.

Freeze proof, drop proof (2m) AND its the finest pore size of any commercially available water purifier. The Guardian it fits into is self cleaning too.

Bought this expensive filter as a spare. Beat up along the way, no protective packaging, just a thin plastic bag. Way to go, Adorama.

My sawyer inline filter broke 2 days in to our backpacking trip. Luckily my buddy brought one of these, days of yummy water, not a hint of trouble. I just ordered one for myself. Without the MSR we would have barely made it back - dehydrated and miserable.

We are hiking 400miles in a National Park with little running water. Halfway through we needed to replace our filter. Too much sediment kills this filter quickly and algae is an instant killer. So if you don't need to filter your water, it might last longer. But for those of us that really needed it, it only lasted 800 liters. But without it we would not have survived.

The instructions for storing the MSR Guardian warn against removing the filter and letting it dry out. If the hollow membrane fibers dry out they will no longer accept water. The replacement filter comes in a box, no air tight packaging. So if you have it as a backup element it is going to dry out and be useless. I have searched the net and there is no mention of this potential problem. If you buy this replacement as a backup you'll have to keep it moist. Once a year I pump water through it, remove the filter, cover with Saran wrap and put a 3 inch silicone band around it.
