My older neighbors snow blower wouldn’t spin the auger and he was going to have someone repair it. I told him I’d tear it down and look at it. He knew it was probably the worm gear and he was right. Tore to shreds but it is brass so is the weak point. A new assembly was nearly $400 so instead we got this gear and cleaned up the rest and threw it back together. Now he should get another 3-4 seasons out of it for around $50 total with grease and some new bolts.

This gear replaced a completely worn down gear in the auger drive gear assembly as shown. This gear was a fraction of the price of a new assembly so I thought I'd take a chance at repair myself. Worked better than I could have imagined. Cheers!

A year or so ago, my MTD snow blower's auger stopped turning. All the shear pins were intact, and a little detective work uncovered an auger gearbox that was no longer doing its job. I parked it and finished up with a snow shovel-- not my favorite pastime, but I got lucky that it had been a really light snowfall.I tore the gearbox apart and saw that the bronze worm gear had worn out. It had been used for 10 years and had suffered its share of crashes so I wasn't terribly surprised. The local machinery dealer was sold out-- apparently this is a common failure point.The dealer would take a while to replenish stock so I looked up the original part and cross-referenced it to this one. After a couple of days I had it in my hands.The worm gear was a direct replacement for what was originally in my snow blower. I made sure to clean out all the debris from the old gear and to repack the gearbox with grease. After some reassembly, the snow blower started up and the auger worked just like it had when it was new.This gear is less than $25, so I ended up buying another one. I keep it in a box with spare shear pins. I can replace it in a couple of hours and have a functional snow blower again, which beats shoveling by hand for two days while the delivery truck shows up. Maybe I'll never need it, but if I do...

Perfect fit. Exact replacement. And pretty straight forward install with good cleaning, then grease up gears and then RTV for gasket material. Very cost effective if you have the ability and tools for diy.

Excellent quality & delivery, and easy installation. Performed perfectly after gear box reassembled, lubed, and tested under load. (Condition of old gear key should be inspected prior to ordering new worm gear. If it's showing signs of wear and/or not fitting properly in the shaft, then it will need to be ordered separately.)

This little piece was exactly what we needed to fix our Craftsman snowblower - instead of spending hundreds for a larger replacement part and labor, we spent around thirty. Woohoo! The old gear was terribly stripped but, happily, that was the only reason the blades had stopped turning. Meticulous disassembly, cleaning and greasing everything, replacing this gear, and then putting it all back together were what the snowblower doctor ordered. So glad this part was available and thinking about ordering another for future replacement, assuming the same thing will eventually happen in another few years.
