We had our kitchen flood with water from a burst water filter under the sink and this handy little tool was good at detecting moisture in the walls underneath the kitchen. Of course the professionals we hired through insurance had similar tools to help identify which walls were to be replaced, but it's good to know we also have our own tool should we ever need to measure moisture in the walls for whatever issue. I have not tried it with lumber or firewood yet but that would be useful too.

Consigliato.

As we decided to add a wood stove to our new build, and being on 16 acres, we have plenty of firewood. I had several trees lying on the ground from last year, asking with several new trees recently taken down. I bought a splitter in order to season all this woods. I was hoping the logs from last year would be dry enough to burn in the house, which is why I chose this moisture meter. The instructions tell you the right away, AAC’s the wrong way to chuck moisture with this meter. Where the instructions lack is the explanation of setting the meter to the type is of you are testing. I didn’t recognize hardly any of them, but the closest sounding types seem to be type 3. You are not suppose to check the cut ends, or in the long way of the grain inside the cut. Best is to check across the grain, which In thinking because the moisture flowing along that grain would read higher. I checked several of the logs from the trees taken down last year, abcs the readings were mostly in the teens, some higher, since lower. I then checked the trees that were knocked down in recent months and those registered very moist, in the 30-50% range. Now it is a matter of time and testing, and seeing how smoky they may be. Maybe October I’ll be able to fire up the new wood stove, but for now, we have a nice fire pit we can test some. The screen of this meter barely lights up and is very difficult to see in the bright outdoors, never mind in sunlight.

SummaryThe Aicevoos AS-N6 Wood Moisture Detector is a user-friendly device that efficiently checks moisture levels in most building materials. Its cost-effectiveness saves you from the hassle of tearing into walls to find leaks. The unit's adjustable settings for different wood types and its color-changing display make it easy to use. The probes, designed to penetrate multiple layers of paint, further enhance its user-friendliness, making it a practical and reliable tool for any DIY enthusiast, homeowner, or professional in construction or woodworking. The only CON is the manual. Fortunately, I have worked with moisture sensors, so it was not an issue. A newbie may need to play with it to understand its uses and issues.DetailThe Aicevoos AS-N6 Wood Moisture Detector is designed to report the moisture level in various types of wood. I tried it on several pieces of building material around the shop, and it works as advertised. My primary use was not to check the dryness of wood, but to check for dampness in a wall.I had an area in the house that smelled damp at certain times of the year, but it was fine at other times. The room was not near a bathroom, so I was not worried about a leak and saw no signs of water. A friend had borrowed my old moisture meter and move away so a new one was in order. One day, when the room smelled damp, I walked around the house, checking the dryness of the walls. Most were not an issue and showed low moisture levels in the drywall. Pinholes left by pushing the probe in are easy to fix if needed. In my case, I wanted to get a good reading. However, an area in the room in question showed a higher level than the surrounding walls. Using an endoscope camera, I drilled a small hole into the wall. What I found was the contractor had run an uninsulated cold water pipe up the wall. The wall was not insulated and seemed to be open to the attic. When the weather got damp/cool, water would condense and drop down collecting on the wall plate. The quick fix was easy using a little foam pipe insulation that I could push up the pipe from a small area I opened on the wall. No tearing into and having to repair the walls after looking for the problem. A permanent fix will be installed in the summer using fiberglass to seal openings. In summary, the device helped me find the problem without making a series of holes in the walls to look around. The cost was insignificant compared to the time it would have taken to repair the wall.

This moisture meter is a handy tool for measuring moisture in lumber and firewood. The listing claims it is also for testing drywall and home interiors, but the manual doesn't have any calibration settings for that. I suppose it will give you a rough idea if your house is too wet.The probes are sharp and highly tapered, allowing good contact with the wood. As with most probe type meters, you need to hold it very still to get a consistent reading.I compared this to an older, more simple moisture meter that I have, and I believe the results from this device were better on wood, mostly because this tester expects you to set a "Tree Type" prior to testing. If you don't know what type of wood you're testing, your results may vary.Minor issues:Results were quite different based on the "Tree Type" that was set, but I believe this makes it more accurate. Be sure to set it to the proper wood type before testing. If you're testing different types of wood, don't lose the wood type chart in the manual. There are no settings for other materials. Also, it is very dim and difficult to read in natural light, and nearly invisible in direct sunlight.Better than my old meter, so I'll give it 5 stars with reservations.

Reading the reviews there are a lot of folks using this in flooding and construction. I am guess it is okay for that but these designed for use in measuring moisture in slab lumber and various other green woods. I have a shed full of wood I use for woodturning and I poked it into every piece I could find but it kept reading 0.0% . I live in a very dry climate but that really isn't possible all wood should have some moisture it absorbs. I decided to test it in a cup of water which it read as 40% moisture and a live tree which is read at 13% moisture.

The meter is easy to read and produces readings that compare well to my other moisture meters. The instruction manual isn’t the best, but a bit of experimentation will ensure you get to know how it works.Build quality is good for the price. The metal pins are very sharp – don’t lose the plastic cover for them!
