Nissan trucks have a chronic problem with dust clogging up the EVAP canister vent valve, causing engine check code P0448. Older Xterras (2005- ?) have the vent hose from the vent valve routed to a hole in the left rear frame, where eventually the vent sucks in find dust and clogs the vent valve, causing the code P0448. This 14953-ZP70C Vapor Canister Filter is a Nissan 'Upgrade' kit to add a 'filter' (Nissan part number 14953-ZJ00A) where the vent hose goes into the frame to stop the dust going to the vent valve. Newer Nissan trucks and Xterra's have this 'filter' provided (on inside of left frame behind the left rear wheel). However, the 'filter' is not a filter but a simple baffle (see photo looking into the 'filter' from the top) that does not stop fine dust. So whether you have an older Nissan and add this kit, or a newer NIssan that includes the 'filter', if you drive on dirt roads eventually the vent system will clog with dust and show code P0448. Eventually the dust buildup can damage the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve and can end up filling the EVAP canister with dust. Dealer repairs can easily run from $100 to over $300. Nissan has a fundamental design problem in venting the EVAP vent system in the dusty left rear frame rather than a cleaner area.
