Thick glass makes it easy to move confidently. Comes with both screw cap and bung stopper with vent system. These are great fermenting jars but have a few drawbacks. These are not made to put chunky fruit or large items inside as it would be hard to fish them out and impossible to clean the jug. It's also difficult to clean the jug because you can't reach your hand inside and scrub easily. For this reason I highly recommend the wide mouth versions with lids and vents. If you are making a plain mead from honey, water, and yeast then these might be perfect for you. If you're making it from buckwheat honey or adding any kind of fruit inside then you will get staining and little bits that are hard to remove from the inside neck. Also while it's fermenting you need room for the bubbles so it doesn't blow out the top. The wide mouth versions give you the room. These narrow necks consolidate and I've had more blowouts with these than the wide mouth. Again if you're just making plain versions then these are for you. If you're trying to do anything fancy or you want something you can easily clean, go wide mouth. I have a review on those as well.

The first package I received had a shattered glass. I was concerned with that and the reliability of the product. The company made up for it I was expecting to receive a replacement for the single carboy but received a full replacement. In the time I started using the good carboy and it is just as good as a higher dollar item. I am very happy with the product and with the speedy customer service in getting the replacement. I will shop with Northern Mountain Supply in the future

These are the overall best bang for your buck 1 gallon carboys out there. Some people have said they received theirs damaged but I've bought several and never experienced that problem, but that can be the nature or ordering and shipping glass so beware just in case. Additionally, I love the fact they included airlocks and regular screw on lids for the carboys. Again, some people have said they experienced issues with the carboy popping off, but I have never experienced that. An easy solution is a rubber band on the top. I would recommend for anyone trying to get low cost brewing gear. It's hard to get into a hobby when there is a barrier to entry, mainly the high cost of gear.

Bottles bungs and airlocks are passable especially if it's hard for you to find one gallons locally.I got one with a broken mouth. Everything else was okay so I started using the whole one. Turns out you have to return everything to amazon instead of being able to request just a single replacement item from what I can tell. It's not really worth the effort for me to go take all this in for a 10$ bottle and wait for another ship date etc.Just a cautionary tale, I'm sure if they all arrived broken it would be a different story for you.

I'm a new brewer making my first batch of muscadine wine. I made several mistakes already, so when I went looking for some carboys, I was careful to read all the reviews. This carboy sounded great, and of course had great ratings! But the top not sticking worried me.... so I not only ordered this, I ordered other tops with airlocks at the same time to avoid the problem of the bung/rubber stopper popping back out.As soon as I got it, the first thing I did was push the bung/rubber stopper into the bottle. It fit great! Perfectly even, if it were smaller, it would risk falling into the bottle and I'd never get it back out. No popping out, and worked great! So I tranferred my ferment into the bottles... pushed the rubber stopper in.... and it popped out a few seconds later. WHAT? But I pushed it in when I received it and it was fine!I immediately got the other rubber stopper I had separately purchased. It was not solid, it was more a U-shaped form that looked like it would wedge really well. Washed it, dried it, and pushed that in... and it popped out in a few seconds too! What was going on? Neither stopper was wet, I was very careful to let them dry completely. The bottle mouth was wiped down. Wetness wasn't an issue. When I transferred into the carboy, it was at 6 days, but muscadines must come with a ton of yeast, because boy, ferment was in FULL steam! The foam was raging and the only reason I moved it was because I had to get the peels and seeds out, worried that it would sour my wine. Everything I read said remove the skins between 5-7 days (at 6 days, it was definitely wine already, had a reading of 15% alcohol, and incredibly delicious but sweet). Well, it was in full blown fermentation still, and the airlocks weren't able to release the gas fast enough.I finally figured out a great solution with kitchen items, since I couldn't stand there holding the tops down.... and it didn't seem to matter what top I used, they weren't staying in the bottle. This works! I tied a ziplock tie around the neck, just under the protruding glass ring at the top of the bottle. Just tight enough to not slide back over the top, but with a small gap where the ziplock closed. Then used a long bread tie, folded in half, and pushed both halves into the small opening in the zip tie. Holding one end of the bread tie, I slid the other end of the bread tie around to the opposite side of the rubber stopper. Pushed the rubber stopper down tight where I wanted it to go, and pulled the bread tie tight on both ends. Then bent both sides of the bread tie up, around the zip tie, on either side of the bottle. I didn't need to twist, just bending the bread tie ends up was enough to hold the rubber stopper from popping back out, you're only stopping bubbles after all, so it was a very small amount of continuous pressure forcing the rubber stopper back out. It's happily bubbling away in the airlock, with a bubble every few seconds on both bottles, and the seal is tight. I'm keeping the other stoppers and airlocks as backups. If you don't have a ton of fermentation going on when you fill it, you probably won't have this problem, but mine was raging and no stopper worked, the problem isn't the stopper, it's the sheer amount of gas being released. This solution took a few seconds and costs nothing. Hope it helps:)!

I use these to make mead and was so happy with the first set of two that I bought another set. Unfortunately in this order, one of the airlocks came cracked and is unusable. I am unable to find a way to reach out to the seller to request a replacement. The only option I found was to return the entire set and they can't have the blueberry muffin mead that is currently in one of the carboys!

Everything arrived in perfect condition. The glass carboys are thick and sturdy. The plugs seat deep and secure, do not leak, and do not migrate out. The air locks were in perfect condition and work well. This set of two is economically priced and a good value. I like the one gallon size for making smaller batches of mead, and I can make different kinds without making a large quantity that takes a long time to use.
