The leather is a corrected split grain cut, which means it is not the full thickness of Bambi's hide. It's a slice from the inner side of the hide. The outside is "corrected", as it has been dyed & textured. The other side resembles suede.Actually, the leather rather thin, but should stand up to casual work use, such as working a shovel . I would not do anything abrasive with this thin leather. Basically, the leather is protecting the liner which does the "keep warm" work. On The Good Side- Being deer skin, the leather will remain soft after drying. The manner in which each mitten is stitched, single- gather, non-lapped, will allow water to enter. They will never be truly waterproof. (They're not advertised as such.) But they will be very wind proof. My pair came with one seam already ripped, which the American Living Online surely will replace without problems. (The have a very good reputation.)Keep in mind that the main inner liner comes out, so when the pair does get wet. the liner and mitten will dry very quickly. The part on the back of the hand does not come out, but it's really thin & will dry. Note, too, that the lining is polyester. It should last forever. The removable lining is rather plush and should keep one warm. There is an extra, thin lining on the other side of the inside of the mitt. It should add some warmth.Regarding the advertising fluff in the listing about Northstar being a U. S. family owned business, perhaps the company that imports these is based in the U. S., but these mittens are 100% Chinese. Even the leather is Chinese, as evidenced by the unmistakable aroma that chemicals used for processing Chinese leather has (versus North American leather).I suppose these are overall good mittens, for light duty work, but I was disappointed int he quality & the lack of any North American parts or labor in these mittens. I expected more for the money- especially after comparing to others that I own.SIZE NOTE- My palm, at the widest point, is 22 cm (8-3/4") circumference. The length from the wrist joint to the tip of the center finger is 20 cm (8"). The Size Large fits with no room for extra liners underneath, which you probably will never need. . The thumb joint is a little above the hand's joint, but it's fine.

I needed mittens to keep my hands warm. I have Raynaud syndrome in my fingers. As long as the mittens are in the house and warm , my hands stay warm when I’m out. Don’t leave in a cold car. If you need to leave mittens in a car, get all wool or alpaca. I ordered a pair for my oldest son in CT, who also has Raynaud’s.These are not waterproof. Use Snow seal on them to repel snow or water. It usually darkens the color. As far as size, I’m between medium & large. The large are nice for me. I haven’t tried it but there’s room to slip a chemical hand warmer between the liner & the shell.

Great for winter walking and running the snowblower. Fair price, too.

Very high quality mittens. They keep my fingers warmer on cold walks. They still get cold when shoveling snow at 5 degrees, but much better than any of my gloves. One issue I have is the gloves come up quite high, and they don't always mesh together with my coat cuff. I wonder if the version with the shorter cuff might work better. But I definitely like the mittens, and any other version would definitely be from the same company. Very high Quality.

These are beautifully made, well sewn, soft and warm🤗 They seem a bit small-I ordered a large and they aren’t overly big on me, but I don’tHave petite lady-hands🤷🏼♀️ These are a gift, will update after they’ve been worn awhile.Update:The mitts are well loved, have been very warm and have stood up to a Minnesota winter very well! I haven't used these mittens yet but since there are no other reviews yet I will give my first impressions and possibly update after I have more experience with the mitts. My hand girth is 8.75" and length is 7.7". Therefore my glove size is usually men's medium. I ordered size large of these mittens because of the reviews of the Northstar 51T mittens that say those mittens run small. The large feels like the correct length but they feel a little wide. Bigger mittens should be warmer than mittens that restrict blood circulation. I doubt if they will stretch because there isn't much pressure inside. They are very comfortable and I will keep them. The dexterity should be fine for larger objects and maybe zipper pulls. For smaller things I will just pull my hands out because that is fast and easy. The removable liners are mittens, not gloves like in the 51T mittens. I believe mitten liners are warmer but glove liners provide more dexterity when pulled out of the shell. I have gloves for warmer days or when I need more dexterity and these mittens for when it is cold enough to require mittens. Also, you can remove the mitt liners and use glove liners instead if you have glove liners. Removable liners make these mittens more versatile. There are two strips of velcro that hold each liner in each mitt. It is easy to pull your hand out without the liner pulling out. Here is another advantage of removable liners. If you need better waterproofing, you can remove the liners and work sealer into both sides of the leather without getting any sealer on the liners. I have waterproof mittens for rain and snow so I might not seal them. I will use these for alpine skiing on cold but dry days. The clip that holds the mitts together is a handy feature.I turned the shells inside out for closer inspection and the materials and workmanship seem good to me but I'm not an expert on this. The leather is nice and soft. They should be warmer than the 51T mittens because of the longer gauntlet and because of the mitten liner. For me they are worth the $7 premium over the 51T mittens.
