Immediately started having problems with recorder. It has eaten tapes, door either won't open or pops off completely. Sound isn't any better than the $35 recorder I bought for backup. Definitely not worth the money. Sound isn't any better than cheaper models. So disappointed. It is a cheaply made, plastic piece of junk.

I bought two recorders in December 2012. I used one until it dropped on the floor and the battery door broke (my fault). When I went to use the second one, I discovered that the rewind button doesn't work! $149 recorder??? Really??? It is now April 2013, and I am beyond the return date. From now on, I will stick with the inexpensive recorders.

Mechanism is smooth and works very well. Had one glitch but that seemed to pass over. Better than Sony or Panasonics still available.

I had already returned a defective microcassette recorder. This one also had noise and the rewind wouldn't work so I flipped the tape and used fast forward and then that didn't work.

I've used my Pearlcorder S922 twenty(?) some years for recording speeches and loaning to students and practicing my own readings. It just quit. This model is outdated but I hope to get another as good as it's invaluable, fits in my purse also!. I bought it at Costco many years ago. Wondering if my cassettes will work in J500.Thanks Olympus!

It's hard to find a good microcassette recorder, as everything has gone digital. This one works great. Easy to use, and nice clear recordings for transcription. I highly recommend it. It's worth the extra $30-40 to get something that works!!

Our attorneys love the Pearlcorder! It is effective and efficient for the job(s) we perform. We wish these were available at local stores but apparently everyone has moved to digital.

Having being a serious user of Olympus photographic equipment since the 1970's I inevitably turned to this manufacturer when seeking to replace a much overworked [and sadly accidentally consigned to the sea] 10 year old Pearlcorder voice recorder. Why, you may ask, did I not go for a solid state digital version - much lighter and with far greater capacity - simply because I still use a typist's foot operated micro cassette transcription deck which suits me fine.Initially the unit slotted into my life without difficulty. It had far better battery life than the old machine, a more sensitive mic, and the luxury of voice activated recording which left my hands free for other tasks. It's recordings were crisp and clear, tapes slotted straight into my transcription deck, and everything in the garden was rosy. Until the J500 got damp! The old Pearlcorder, even in the most atrocious conditions, never missed a beat nor failed to record my notes [and not a few spontaneous oaths]. Hoverer it's replacement, whilst appearing to be working fine, sometimes produced tapes devoid of any sounds - somewhat pointless for a writer! Needless to say this fault developed AFTER the warranty had expired. Now my quandary is whether to replace it with a "like for like" machine, go for a more sophisticated Olympus version, or bite the bullet and go digital - with the quite substantial cost of a new transcription unit. I had thought of going "voice to text" but experience shows that this technology is not yet perfect.Perhaps I have been unlucky, perhaps my J500 is unusual, perhaps 2008 technology is just not as tough as 1998 - I simply don't know. So, in essence, and from personal experience, this is a super little machine for those still hooked on micro cassettes - as long as you keep it warm and dry!Sorry Olympus - you can't please everybody all the time.
