Product Description

The silver LH-48B Lens Hood for M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 Lens from Olympus is a metal lens hood designed specifically for the above mentioned 17mm F1.8 lens. The primary purpose of a lens hood is to deflect unwanted light from entering the lens and producing flare. It can also provide a degree of protection for the lens from accidental impact and the elements. A dedicated lens hood is designed specifically for the focal length of its lens and provides enough extension to deflect light without intruding on the image frame.

Unlike most lens hoods, this one is not twist-on. While it is reversible, product images fail to show a little screw on the side that needs to be tightened for the hood to stay on. Who has the time to screw around (pun intended)? Besides, it is something that's likely to break if you are not careful. To add insult to injury, the hood does not slide over lens filters. It is possible (although very tricky) to attach a lens filter after you mount the hood first, but it means that for all practical purposes the hood is no longer reversible. That's a deal breaker for me.For something that should already be included with the lens, but instead costs $60 and features such a poor design, Olympus (OM Systems) should be ashamed.

This is expensive I have to say but after an experience with a cheaper alternative on another lens I was not prepared to compromise! It is a case of you get what you pay for, beautiful hood complements my Olympus 17mm very well. I can't comment on the cheaper alternatives out there but I am very pleased with this hood. Quality and looks beautiful on my silver 17mm.

I'm giving it 1-star because technically it is what it is (a lens hood) and there is no option for 0 stars. $60+ (retail) for a made in China molded piece of metal that probably cost $3 to manufacture and ship. And, it's not included with the purchase of the $500 17 mm lens. There's more. The lens hood doesn't fit over a filter. You need to put the hood on first and then literally drop a filter onto the lens and wiggle/screw it into place with your fingertips. Incredibly inconvenient if you might want to shoot without the hood, for cleaning or to remove the hood for packing. Also, you cannot use a third-party lens cap with the lens hood. You better not lose that Olympus lens cap. Hmm, I wonder how much a replacement cap costs? With the hood on, it's extremely difficult to get the lens cap off quickly. You better have very small fingers or else forget it.I find it hard to believe that this is the only technologically possible lens hood design for the 17mm lens. Combine the above with the gross price mark-up and you have to question if Olympus just wants to stick it to the customer.I'd love to sit in the office of Olympus' CEO and watch him try to put on and take off the hood, filter and cap. That would be priceless.

I bought The Olympus LH-48B lens hood for my new Olympus 17mm 1.8 lens. I was shocked that Olympus does not include hoods with their lenses. However, I went for the Olympus Brand hood since I felt that this would be the most sturdy one. I am pleased with this hood and the 17mm lens will not go out without this nice sturdy hood on it. The hood has an interesting thumbscrew that attaches the hood to the lens rather than a threaded hood. The screw pushes a thin metal bar so that the screw does not touch the lens body. I like this. The only downside is that this necessary item should have come with the hood. It is expensive at $69!.

After putting the sunhood there is significant less flare in my pictures with the sun in front. There is also a better overall contrast. I have the impression that overall resolution is also better (I see no reason for that, it's maybe subjective).

I own a number of the Olympus premium Micro 4/3rds lenses. I have the 12mm, the 17mm and the 45mm. In addition I also own the 9-18 which did not ship with a lens hood. I will be the first to say that for the premium prices we are paying for these lenses they should include lens hoods and storage bags. Sadly, we all know they do not. I have tried a number of the knock off hoods and some of them have been ok and some have been really bad. I bit the bullet and bought all the Olympus lens hoods for each of my Olympus lenses. I figure these are long term purchases and I would like to enjoy the lenses as intended. The LH-48B is like all the others. The finish is excellent, the construction is solid and the fastener screw tightens down a circular clamp that surrounds the lens instead of pressing directly on the lens like a set screw which will scratch it. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it a premium hood? Most definitely. What might be a better solution is to include a cheaper one for free and offer the premium ones for those who want them. I am not sorry I spent the money but I am particular. If you are not you may not see the value. Five star product two star price. I will give it a four stars overall.

An overpriced piece of plastic! It's a shame you need this hood for the Olympus 17MM lens, but it's also a shame that Olympus charges a ridiculous price for a simple plastic ring!
