Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is the breastshield detachable from the bottle connector?

A: No. This breastshield is ONE-PIECE design. Such a design leaves no seams for air leaking and no chance of dropping milk. The disadvantage is that it can't be used with some home-made hands-free bras.

Q: Can I use a hands-free bra with this kit?

A: Yes and no. Being the one-piece design, the breastshield is only compatible with some hands-free bras on the market, like Simple Wishes. You will change the way you are used to inserting the Medela two-piece shield into the bra. However, some home-made bras do not have an optimal design in the opening, thus they cannot be used with this kit.

Q: How do I choose the breastshield size?

A: Firstly, measure your nipple diameter (ND). You can use any available nipple ruler on the market or Maymom has one that you can download to print. Ideally, we suggest that the measurement be done right AFTER a pumping session; then first try a breastshield that is 1-2 mm larger than your ND. If you happen to measure the ND BEFORE pumping, then try a breastshield size 2-4mm larger. Because the nipple elasticity of each mother is different, this suggestion is only a start. The best fit of a breastshield can never be learned until you actually try one out. If you are still not sure, consult a lactation consultant.

Q: Where can I find the size marking on the breastshield?

A: It is marked at the end of the nipple tunnel.

Q: Why is there no suction or low suction power?

A: 1. Please check if you have installed the valve and membrane. Many new mothers forget to do so.

2. When installed, make sure the membrane is facing the same direction of the Maymom logo on the breastshield.

3. Make sure the membrane can lay flat on the valve when it is in the in-use position (meaning the valve opening is pointing upside, not sideways).

4. Make sure the air path in the breastshield is not blocked.

5. If you can't solve the issue, contact the seller with a photo of your setup for help.

Q: Can I boil the parts in water?

A: Yes. Before using for the first time and once daily, sterilize all parts with water steam for 15 minutes or in boiling water for 5 minutes. After each use, disassemble all parts, clean with soapy water, and rinse with tap water. When using boiling water, make sure to cover all parts with water to avoid melting.

Q: Are they dishwasher safe?

A: You may dishwash breastshields, valves and membranes on TOP rack with LOW heat drying. Some parts are very small; check that no parts are missing after cleaning.

They seem more like 20 cm than 21 cm. I don't have any way of measuring them but they feel smaller when I use them. I've been pumping for a couple months and have a decent sense of how things usually feel. Otherwise they work well.

Easy to figure out how to attach to put parts together and connect to medela pump. All attachment parts are sterilizable too, however you may need a smaller brush to scrub inside of the valve for proper cleaning.

First thing first i NEVER leave product reviews but I LOVE THESE FLANGES and the fact that this company exists!!quick story: I started pumping extra milk when my daughter was born so i would not have any problems with my milk supply, and so that i could have a little freezer stash. However my freezer started filling up so i looked into what i could do with the extra breast milk. And i found that i could donate/ sell my extra milk to a milk bank that formulates breast milk for babies in the NICU, so i started pumping more, to up my supply in the hopes i could produce enough milk to quit work and be able to stay home with my baby. But after pumping extra boy oh boy my nipples were SORE! and i wanted to cry when i found out that the smallest size the pump companies made was a size 21 m flange (as i was using a 22). but a friend told me that she found this company on amazon and they made the smaller flanges. so i immediately ordered some. when they arrived I felt like I could pump all day, the difference was AMAZING. now you wonder why i brought up the milk bank.... I nurse my daughter AND AND AND pump an EXTRA 60 OZ a day (thats a lot of pumping)!! and its is only possible because of these flanges. If i was still using the standard size flange i would not be pumping the extra milk and would probably be at work crying because my nipples would be raw when i would have to pump. (I was able to quit work) not to mention with the correct size flange my milk lets down faster and i even get more milk out. do not wait any longer if your flanges don't fit there is a whole wonderful world of proper fit flanges!!!For the actual flanges themselves I love that they are one piece so you can really see if your nipple is rubbing on the side or if its where it should be, and the plastic is clearer than the ameda or medela brand flanges so you can see through the plastic even better than their flanges. All in all I really just want to give this company a big thanks!

I have been using the standard medley pump flanges for a few years with my first son and now with my second. I used to get bruises and have lots of pain when I used these... I didn't know the flanges came in other sizes. I know I have very small nipples and I didn't realize that the pump was actually taking in tissue it wasn't supposed to suck in. I honestly just thought to look into alternative pump flanges a month after my second son was born and I did it because the end of the areola and nipple never felt drained, when I self expressed, I always got another let down and it was back on with the pump flange. So I decided to get the smallest flange out there and I am so glad I did! these 19mm openings produce more let downs, my nipples aren't misshapen afterward and they no longer bruise or hurt. I think the design is similar but improved upon the original flanges in a way that minimizes spray in the vertical chamber which reduces waste...for those of us who try to recover every last drop. The perfect way the milk falls from its intended port into the second chamber is so much more direct and as the design has intended it compared to the other flanges.I don't like 2 things, the opacity of the thicker plastic nipple chamber makes visibility difficult. I use compressions in conjunction with each let down and in between them so I do watch for visual confirmation in the chamber. However, the thickness of the chamber surrounding plastic is an improvement over the other flanges...I actually have a crack in one of the first flanges I used in the chamber which could have soon spread and compromised its suction. The overall construction of these flanges is superior and improved. Everything fits very snugly where parts are meant to be attached. The second thing I don't like is that these flanges are smaller and aren't as secure in my hands free pumping bra with round holes (not the type with overlapping material) as the larger, original flanges...the holes in the bra are somewhat stretched and if I compress during pumping, the bottom of the flanges can pop out of the hole. This too has an upside...i am able to compress more breast tissue without the larger perimeter of the other flanges...so I can just get another bra or modify this one. And, the diameter, of course, is perfect for me.I think this company has made a superior product both in design and function...they offer a size medley does not and it's exactly what I needed. It's a well priced product...they seem well worth the price and I would have paid more for these after knowing what I know about them now.I highly recommend trying a smaller flange if you experience bruising or have build up of milk in your nipple that isn't adequately removed while pumping.
