Sturdy well-made product. The best feature is the hasp (metal hoop) that keep the handle closed. When my last unit wore out, blade dulled after many years of use, it was less expensive to buy an entire new unit than replace the blade (assuming you can find a blade). I bought a unit at a local big box store, the blade bent and I wasn't abusing it, but most importantly, it like so many others on Amazon and other sellers have a mechanism to latch the handles. Problem is, it takes very little to release that latch, In my tool pouch it releases, barely touch it, it releases, that design is worthless IMO. Look at the pictures of the competitors, if you see a clip within the handle, then it will release with very little pressure. IThe metal hasp takes an extra second to release the handle for use, but when the metal hasp is "closed" over the handle, it will stay closed.Thrilled I found this to replace my long loved cutter. Sorry I wasted money on the other version. You want this one. Heavy duty. Stays closed

This is the tool our good friend and master craftsman uses -- he's remodeling our bathroom and I've been shadowing him when I can to learn. We redid all the plumbing to put in 2 shower heads and replaced all the copper pipes with PEX. This tool cuts PEX very well and is easy to use. Haven't used it on irrigation hosing but I imagine it would be even easier. I have an irrigation project up next that I'll use this for. So buy this if you're looking for an inexpensive pipe cutter for things like PEX or irrigation tubing. When I looked it up I expected it to be pricey, but I think it's totally reasonable and worth the price. I recommend it, totally.and I don't get anything for writing this review by the way. Just trying to be helpful!

I've owned this before and after a couple of years they broke. I wasn't overly kind to them. Anyway, I used the non-ratcheting cutter for about a month, what a pain, especially when cutting the thicker pvc. These cutters cut that stuff like butter, I will never use the other cutters again, ratcheting cutters is where its at!

Received this product and the blades are seized. They will not open....even with moderate force. I would give this zero stars if I could.

Works fine if you just need to cut some PVC pipe and its okay if the cuts aren't perfectly square. If you require perfectly square cuts, I would suggest looking elsewhere since this cutter seems to be hit or miss on if it cuts square or not (per cutter, not per cut). Also be aware that this cutter doesn't have spring action and you need to open the handles really far before the blade opens - I actually thought I received a dud at first because I was only opening the handles as far as they opened with no resistance.Mostly what I do isn't picky about square as long as its close, which it is, but the specific project I ordered this for requires square cuts, so that's a bummer, but I should still be able to get good use out of this. The cutter I received doesn't cut squarely because the blade comes down at an angle and it doesn't matter how careful I am positioning the pipe, as soon as the blade reaches it, it gets clamped in place between the blade and the guard so there is no way for me to re-position the pipe for a square cut. From what I can tell from my own experience as well as other reviews for this product, some cutters do cut square, some don't. I'm all for allowing for user error, but I noticed that as I was bringing the blade down (just testing the mechanism, not cutting pipe) that the blade was angling toward one side as it went instead of coming down square.

The cuts weren't perfectly straight, but it got the job done well enough that a clean join can be done. Totally worth the money.I understand other people reviews about 'pulling it back'. After every notch is cranked you must pull it back all of the way so that the latch falls onto the next tooth of the gear. So keep that in mind.

It is very helpful for a woman, because I don't have the same strong hand like a man. This tool keep in place the hose and in the same time cut up. It is more easy to make a right angle often.

If you are installing any type of plastic sprinkler pipe, this product is a must have tool. The blade is extremely sharp and cuts through poly pipe like a hot knife through butter. My only complaint is that occassionaly I had to repeatedly squeeze the handles to get the blade to catch and come down. You see, the blade closes via a gear system where each time you close the handles, it rachets down tighter. On mine the gear would keep slipping and the blade would not want to close any tighter. Sometimes I would have to squeeze the handle 10-15 times to get it to close, but it worked. A bit annoying, but when it worked it did a great job. At half the price as the same basic model from the big box store, I am pretty happy. By the way - I used this tool to cut 1 inch and 3/4 inch poly pipe.
