Ortofon Care of Stylus

Care of Stylus

With proper care we find that up to 1,000 hours is possible without degradation of performance. The stylus does begin to exhibit changes after 1,000 hours, but the stylus life as a whole is expected to top 2,000 hours.

Proper care is comprised of the following:

• Cleaning of record by means of fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while.

• Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip, never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.

• Proper adjustment of alignment, antiskating, azimuth and tracking force.

• Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.

Ortofon 2M Series Upgrades

Ortofon 2M series styli interchangeability

Physically 2M styli will fit on alternative 2M cartridges bodies, but 2M Series cartridges’ engines, coils and magnets configurations are not quite identical:

Red and Blue are identical, so are the Bronze and Black and so are the true mono variants 2M Mono and 2M 78

Ortofon 2M Series

History of the 2M Series

The 2M Series was developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Moeller Jensen Design. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.

Of course, the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.

The name “2M” was chosen as it represents the abbreviation for moving magnet, MM.

The four-model 2M line was originally introduced in 2008, and since then the range has been extended to include True-mono models 2M MONO and 78. Also available are models with expanded mounting options, such as Verso for bottom mount headshells and PnP for direct mounting on arms with universal mount.

In the beginning was the soundtrack

On the 9th of October 1918, the two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen (1887-1971) and Arnold Poulsen (1889-1952) founded the Electrical Phono Film Company with a few capable and foresighted businessmen who would support the organization financially.

Their aim was to explore the possibility of high-class recording and developing one of the first synchronized sound film systems in the world. Under primitive conditions, the two Danish engineers and their small staff had to solve a number of what were considered insuperable problems.

Advancements in Sound

The differences among the 2M variants concern three primary areas: engine, body material and stylus profile.

The entire 2M Series features Ortofon’s split pole pins, an invention which enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon and were originally presented in the 500 and Ortofon OM Super Series.

The 2M 78, 2M Mono, 2M Red and 2M Blue use an improved engine, which provides an optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy.

The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver-plated copper wire. The cartridge body material used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances.

A big portion of you looking at this stylus are trying to justify upgrading from the Ortofon 2M Bronze. Is is better to the tune of $576? For me I’m THRILLED I did it.When I got the stylus , I listened to my favorite test song on the Bronze, swapped out for the Black, and the change was significant. I proceeded to slide on my headphones and have a friend do blind tests for me swapping out the styli. Could tell the difference every single time. The Bronze is an incredible cartridge. Add the black and you get a sound stage that is so open. The separation of instruments and the dynamics are amazing. High ends were not shrill, mids were clear and crisp and the bass was punchy without being at all muddled (my biggest disappointment with the Bronze was they muddled bass. It just sounds as pure as the music when it was recorded/mixed to my ear. TIt’s a lot of money to drop. It’s also the best MM cartridge I’ve ever owned. I can only say I have zero remorse.

Maybe it's my hearing or my stereo systems' inability to demonstrate the capabilities of the black stylus over the bronze. I could only tell you two things - high end was louder and the overall output was louder. Tried through two different amps and types of speakers. With the bronze stylus, if I turned the volume up slightly more that seemed to make the bronze sound equivalent to the black. So, it was not worth $576.00 - I did not perceive near that value in improvement in sound.

I had the Ortofon Bronze cartridge and stylus already. I wanted the Black stylus when I bought it but was way over my budget. This stylus is perfectly compatible with the one that arrives with the Bronze. Indeed when I easily and gently pulled the Bronze off the remaining cartridge was all Black and it was simple and easy to fit and then slide the Black onto that cartridge.I took the time to rebalance the tone arm and check the weights. All was well and when I first played some Coltrane it was a strange and uncanny sound that was more and different and to the good side of that. It does lift more sounds from the grooves and adds to the "timbre". To my ear that is a sense of presence. I noticed that it must be digging deep when the tip collected goo and dust from the deeper cut it was making. I clean each record before I play and many are new. I always and especially clean new albums well too because of the dust from making the disc. I regularly use a little box with the stuff to pull the goo off your stylus. There is one in a nice wooden box with magnet closure and sold on Amazon that works really well and is a great buy.I am glad I satisfied 3 years of wanting this needle and it was worth the wait and the saving...

The photos are of the stylus I purchased in July 2022 and of the one Turntable Lab sent back to me as a warranty replacement. Clearly this is not right and I confirmed this directly with Ortofon who agreed to replace the stylus. It appeared that Turntable Lab simply took my returned stylus and put it in a box and returned it to me. I was expecting better service.

A straightforward upgrade to the 2M Bronze cartridge. Very easy to insert, and the sound quality is excellent. Using a Rega P6 turntable and Linn Majik amp. Cost is commensurate with the pleasure I have gained.

By far the black is the best. Just know if u play records like I do about 3 a day you will need to replace it about once a year. It will turn in to a cropduster. It will pick up dust like crazy. But if you replace it once a year it is absolute amazement.
