I bought my first rice cooker after moving out of my house where I lived with my friend from Vietnam. He had a rice cooker and I knew I needed one after that. I had nearly no money, so bought my this model of Oster for Black Friday 2012 for $10. It lasted me 6 years of use multiple times per week before it stopped turning on. I putzed with it for a bit and it seemed like something disconnected that needed to be Soldered back together. Since that's a skill I don't have and I was still short on cash, I looked online to see what a new one would cost knowing it couldn't be too much. $25 later in 2018, I had a new one in my kitchen. This past week in June 2024, I finally had the 2nd one break after constant use for another 6 years. It was a trooper that did its job perfectly and a one of these would probably last the average American a lifetime. For me, I will be moving on from this fabulous and simple model that has served me so well. I'm in a better place financially and will be buying one that will hopefully last me a lifetime. If you're planning to use this once a week, it will probably last you a few decades. It's a fabulous product that I have nothing but good things to say about.

I just HAD to comment on this little rice cooker! The footprint is small. Perfect for small spaces with little storage. HOWEVER, this rice cooker makes EXCELLENT rice! I made the 6 cups cooked max rice and it could not have turned out any better!! Plus, no overflow, no burnt rice, no sticky pan. It also took no longer (30 minutes) than rice on the stove took, and with none of the mess!! Tips: 1. Rinse rice with cold water til water runs mostly clear before adding to pot. Use the cup enclosed with your cooker to measure out the rice-NOT a usual U.S. measuring cup. There is quite a difference in size. Once rice is in pot, add water to water line on side of inner pot. Top with a small pat of margarine or butter, or a tsp. of oil. Mix gently. top with lid and hit the "on" button. When rice is done, it will automatically go to "warm" cycle. Leave for about 10 minutes. Then...ENJOY!! Unplug to cut off cooker. Great little machine that makes a HUGE amount of rice!! Very pleased with quality of machine and rice produced by this machine. Priced so well. Give it a try-you will love it!

Overall, worth the price. You get what you pay for. Etc. It's 19 bloody dollars and comes with a steamer. For a single college guy like me this was perfect. I used to be super lazy with getting another pot to cook vegetables but the steamer here enables me to eat better. There are some quality-of-life concerns though that prevent me from fully endorsing it otherwise.PROS- It's cheap and it works. That's all that is good about it.CONS- Rice bowl and steamer are not actually dishwasher safe. The dishwasher seems to oxidize the components but they're still usable. I have a modern (- Not a great rice cooker. Depending on the type of rice you use, it will unevenly cook the bottom and burn. It seemed to work perfectly for about a month but it seems to have deteriorated. Sushi rice, sweet rice, other enriched grains will leave a burned layer or a congealed stuck layer on the bottom. Trust me I have tried every which way to make it work with my grains and the majority will just leave a layer you will have to clean off. Constant stirring doesn't work, soaking, washing etc. If you buy this you will have to accept that you will have a layer to clean off the bottom. That's what you get for being poor/cheap I guess.

Update 6/17/17: I've now been using the rice cooker for 7 months, and it continues to work fine. I just do 2 cups of brown rice all the time. In addition to rice, I've found it convenient for cooking beans (pinto and black beans). I fill the bottom with about an inch of dry beans, let them soak in water for several hours with the cooker unplugged, and then add spices and let it cook through the regular cycle and then stay on the warm cycle another hours or two. There are 2 negatives: if you put in too much water, prepare for a big mess, and the bottom eventually gets stained with the strongly colored beans.Original review:I've now been using this little rice cooker for over a month, using it about 3 times a week, cooking 1, 2, or 3 cups of brown, white, or brown/white mix (using the "rice cooker cup that comes with it, which is 3/4cup). It's much smaller than rice cookers I've used in the past, and barely can handle the 3 cups. I've been quite happy with it -- the rice is great and it cleans up well. For the price and value, I have no complaints. I've found that adding a little more water and getting the rice right when it's done (that is, don't let it sit there warming too much) gives the best result. Now for the negatives I've found, things which you would expect from such an inexpensive item: 1) when making 3 cups (and sometimes 2) the liquid can climb out the vent hole leading to a messy lid and sometimes spills on the counter, 2) you have to plug and unplug the unit each time you use it or it seems to warm endlessly, and 3) if you let the cooker keep warming for too long after the rice is done, it will often leave brown overcooked rice mat sticking to the bottom. Since I rarely make 3 cups, (1) is not much of a problem, but I do find that (2) is annoying. Regarding (1), I've found that placing a little corn cob skewer in the vent helps limit the mess, perhaps by allowing liquid to drip back into the cooker -- see the photo.
