The item is exactly as described however My male rats did not like it at all. I think it’s hit or miss with rats. They get very food selective. I’ll keep trying!

My rat was very fat so I had been attempting to switch him to the new oxbow brand. The first 2 instances he REFUSED to eat it. On the the third attempt I basically decided if he won't eat it he'll starve. He eventually started to eat the new food and after a couple weeks he's finally at a healthy weight and seems generally happier and has more energy.

I switched my rats to this from Harlan Teklad (aka Envigo) lab blocks 14%. While I think the Teklad is a better food and it offers more protein content options, I had to have it shipped (expensive!) and it often came as half blocks and half dust & sometimes it was unavailable or the shipping was slow. So, I switched to this upon recommendation of the rescue I adopted my rats from. I have one cage of 2 senior males and one of 4 younger females (and never the twain shall meet LOL) and they all took to it right away, eat it & do well on it. My males are almost 3. I am willing to pay more for non GMO foods. I do wish Amazon would also offer the 20# bag for those of us with more rats, altho I usually buy 4 at a time so the shipping is free.

My rats love this food. I like that it is in larger chunks so they can nibble on it with their teeth. It gives them something to work for in their insignificant little lives...

I bought this to supplement my rants non-vegetarian Oxbow food and they love it. They loved it as if I am handing them a treat. I intend to buy more of this when the time comes, simply because they could do with the vegetables. I will not keep this as their main diet however, because I like to feed my rats oysters and beef liver too ie keeping their diet as close to their wild friends, as possible. I am a vegetarian myself, but don’t wish for my beliefs to interfere with their health, values and natural instincts. Rats enjoy a chicken bone to chow, every now and then!

This block diet is better for your rat's constantly growing teeth. Other, mixed diets are actually unhealthy because rats pick favorite treats and leave the rest, leading to unbalanced meals. This block food is balanced and doesn't allow for unhealthy eating. You should still be giving your rats daily handouts of fresh fruits and veggies in addition to the food, and a few treats.
