Egg

Made with high quality shells

Shell powder as feed additive can not only promote the growth of bones and blood circulation of livestock and poultry, but also increase the production of eggs and milk and improve their quality. Especially, adding shell powder in the feed for laying hens or breeders can obviously improve the quality of eggshells, increase the strength of eggshells, reduce the number of broken and soft eggs, and increase the egg production rate. Adding 1% of shell powder to the feed of fat pigs can meet the necessary calcium, phosphorus and other trace elements for the growth of pigs, which can make them feel comfortable and promote their weight growth.

calcium for chickens

Laying hens need a lot of calcium and phosphorus during the egg-laying period, of which about 90% of calcium is used for bones and eggshells, about 80% of phosphorus is used for bones together with calcium, and the rest of calcium and phosphorus is distributed in various tissues throughout the body. An egg weighing about 50-60 grams contains 4.5-5.4 grams of calcium carbonate, and with a calcium utilization rate of 60%, each egg needs about 10 grams of calcium carbonate, or 3.5 grams of pure calcium. However, the body calcium in the chicken is only about 15 grams, and according to the egg-laying needs, the hen's body (including bone calcium) is only enough to lay 3~4 eggs, so a lot of calcium supplementation is needed.

I'm not a chicken expert but my friends told me to get oyster shells to get my chickens to start laying eggs and to lay good eggs so I'm trying it. Product seems good, chickens like it. Haven't laid yet but it's December so I'm just hoping they will. Still, glad I got it.

My hens are smaller than most chickens, they are silkies and prefer smaller beak sized pieces of things. This worked very well for them and today I noticed the oyster shells were all gone in their run! So mission accomplished! 5 stars!

The product is not what I expected. My chickens prefer the slightly powdery mix. But this is very flaky- similar to goldfish food. I have to mix it with the regular food for them to eat it. It seems to have increased the production of eggs though. Since they have eaten it, about a week later all hens were producing more eggs daily.

I have egg laying chickens and since the shells have been added to their diet I noticed the egg shell are a little thicker. It it finely ground shells and I add a small amount to their feed. This is a large bag and will last a long time.

I was super-excited to finally find some calcium grits, for the pigeons that I feed, over in downtown Los Angeles. It’s a great boon, for their health, I’m sure. I’m going to go out and feed the birds today, and give them some grits, as well, for their nutritional supplementation. It’ll be great for this winter season’s pigeon and sparrow snuggling and nesting habits, as they pair up and find a partner to cozy up with. Peck peck peck! 🐦

I used to have a big flock of backyard chickens, and we'd always buy their oyster shell at the feed store. Since my flock is much smaller now (thanks to the local foxes), I thought I'd give this product a try. The chunks of shell are a bit bigger than advertised, but comparable to past crushed oyster shell I've purchased for chickens. My hens gobbled these right up, even though I had baked and crushed eggshells available as well. Supplementing your laying hens' diet with calcium is super important to maintain good eggshell thickness and to support the health of the hen. I disagree with the instructions saying to mix these throughout the chicken food; it's far better to have a small dish of shell available at all times. In my experience, chickens know what their bodies need and will eat only what is necessary. Mixing shells into the food might harm any roosters in the flock, since they don't need nearly as much calcium in their diets as do the laying hens. This shell supplement comes in small bags that hold a reasonable quantity for a few hens, but if you have a larger flock, it's far more cost effective to purchase a big bag at the feed store.
