Redesigned for the gravel roads we ride, the Gravelking SK+ has the same semi-knob tread we loved in the original with a more robust casing to protect against flats. The Gravelking has Panaracer's Zero Slip Grip rubber compound for superior traction when we need it, with a fast-rolling center tread to carry speed on smooth sections. More aggressive lugs on the outside of the tire help us corner with confidence through loose terrain, washboard, or singletrack. Panaracer's ProTite Shield Plus casing adds the layer of protection we need for our tires to float on past the road hazards that would otherwise cause a flat and off to the next horizon.

My wife and I purchased a pair of Aventon Level.2 eBikes last year for commuter and recreational purposes. They are great bikes and definitely worthy of consideration if you are shopping for a reasonably-priced and flexible-use eBike. However, as the miles racked up, it became fairly apparent that the stock tires just were not ideally suited to our area (Monterey Bay CA) and our typical use scenarios (commute-to-work on weekdays, and local greenways and trails on holidays and weekends). In a nutshell, many of the area greenways and trails consist of gravel, hardpacked sand, rough asphalt pavement, or a combination of all three. The stock tires on the Levels.2 are semi-slick in nature, which makes them a very good and fast road tire that also is battery-friendly. Unfortunately, they are nearly useless for anything other than street and well-paved greenway use.Because of that I almost immediately began to research potential tire options that were more-balanced in nature, with the goal of finding something that was still reasonably fast and precise on smooth pavement but also providing good traction and control if things were a bit looser. In reviews the Gravelking Sk + kept coming in towards the top for those requirements and they are available in an exact replacement size for the Level.2’s (27.5 x 2.10). Based on that I ordered a pair for my bike, with the idea of testing and evaluating them for a few weeks before investing in a set for my wife’s eBike (or not). After installing the Gravelking Sk +’s and doing a single 20 mile run, I immediately ordered a 2nd set for our other eBike. They made that much of a difference.Keep in mind dear reader, that tires for eBikes are like tires for cars. No single tire does everything outstanding, but it is possible to get one that does many things well, and this tires falls into that class. Inflated to 42lbs (small inside joke there, but it does seem to be an ideal default inflation pressure for these) these tires are surprisingly fast and precise on smooth pavement. Indeed, while not quite as fast as the stock Level.2 tires, their stiffer sidewalls make up for it by giving a much more confident feel in turn-in and maneuvering. And on dry sand, gravel, and gravel/sand combinations, they are simply an order-of-magnitude superior, providing a level of grip and control on those types of trails that would have caused the Level.2 pre-upgrade to quickly bog down or lose control. Being a hybrid-type design, they do begin to fail in deep sand and/or wet sand or dirt, but in my case those will be the rarest of riding situations so I did not need that level of aggressiveness in tread.Time will tell with regards to wear and puncture resistance, but the carcass of the Gravelking Sk +’s are noticeably heavier than the stock tires, so I would expect that they will hold up better. So, if you are looking for a tire that is more-balanced in capabilities than what you got with your Aventon Level.2’s without sacrificing much in the way of road-friendliness, these tires are definitely worth your consideration.

Guter, haltbarer Mantel.

I bought the 700x38 tan-and-black, which looks very classy and trendy on my gravel bike. Tire width is 38.1mm (both) once installed.I ride them at 45-50 psi, on both roads and hard trails, and have been very satisfied with comfort, efficiency and stability. Plus they appear to provide little rolling resistance (especially on the road) which is of course always appreciated.Contrary to other gravel tires, this one maintain a roundish look (between the sidewalls) as it doesn't have larger knobbies sticking out on the sides. This means a smooth transition from an up-right to a slanted (when turning) position. But it could also mean less grip while riding off-road, although not a problem on gravel and hard trails.I observed that the thread pattern in the center tends to hold on to small rocks and debris, which can be concerning regarding piercing through the casing. I haven't ridden them enough to comment on longevity and puncture resistance. But I do check them and remove debris after riding them, which is a bit more maintenance that I'd like. The installation was fair (on tubeless rims), although this varies (sometimes substantially) depending on the rims themselves and whether they are mounted with tubes or tubeless. No issues thus far. A great tire for road, gravel and hard trails riding.5/17/2021 Update: a tiny piece a glass made its way through the center of the front tire, between some of the small square knobbies, and punctured the tube as well. At that time I went ahead with new wheels and mounted them tubeless (quite easily, without tools) , after using a patch to seal the puncture. I ride them at 42-44 psi and they roll very smoothly.

These Gravelking SKs (which I got in 35mm tubeless-ready setup) proved to be a great all-around performer that were quite a bit more versatile than their name suggests! The tread's above-average grip gave me reasonable confidence commuting through Portland Oregon (where there's weaving through lots of rain, poorly-paved roads/glass and dirt paths) while managing to roll faster on solid ground than the vast majority of the stock tires on my previous mid-grade "hybrid" bikes. However, I did occasionally come across conditions beyond the SK's paygrade, as the wheels would spin a little over large patches of mud (which Panaracer apparently makes a more-aggressive version of the Gravelking for!).I otherwise never felt the need to change tires at any point of the year, whether it was riding through a crappy February or on a longer off-road summer touring trip (as they provide an even plusher ride at low pressure on top of their reliable grip). While the Gravelkings did (thank goodness) prove to handle quite soundly on full-gravel rides as well, be aware that it does (probably in part by design) tend to chuck pieces of gravel up and around your tread, so you'll want to have some space between fellow riders (and preferably have a decent coat of paint to protect the finish of your bottom bracket!).My only real criticisms are Panaracer's seeming lack of attention to the Gravelking's implementation as a "tubeless" tire, which were VERY tricky (read: pain in the ***) to keep seated with my original rims, and I found it odd that they didn't bother to demark the tubeless capability anywhere on the tire (despite confirming with both Panaracer and my awesome Local Bike Shop I in fact did not receive the wrong version of Gravelkings in the mail). That said, it's admittedly hard to complain too much given the general performance and value, being fairly priced for a high-quality made-in-Japan tire!Update: After holding up to 18 months of moderately-vigorous riding (which while not by any means a rock-hard beater-tire, is considerably greater longevity than many other respectably gummy-grippy tires in its class like the Maxxis Rambler), I was compelled to get a new set of the Gravelkings (same spec), which I can happily report has resolved the tubeless labelling issue, and handles every bit as well as I remember the first pair I bought! I wish you happy rides with this tire as well :-)

I was sent the SK version in error as I had wanted the slicks originally. However it worked in my favour as I decided to keep them. The SKs for small knobs are an excellent all-road tyre. Im running them for a mix of pavement, rough roads, double tracks, and gravel. I don’t feel I have much drawback on the blacktop other than a bit of a whir sound at speed but they don’t feel slow at all. They really shine when I go exploring and go down side roads and trails, I don’t have to worry.Overall they are a great tyre and I don’t see much need to run a different set for the vast majority of my mixed road riding.
