21 November 2024The refurbished Panasonic HC-X20 video camera arrived in good and working condition in an nice thick protective fabric case with several compartments and sealed with zippers. I pulled the eight-year-old Sandisk memory cards out of my nonfunctional Panasonic HC-X1000 camera, and I was able to record a few seconds of video with the HC-X20 in Auto mode, though LED of card slot No. 1 was a disturbing yellow, rather than a soothing green blinking LED.The problems with this order were the fault of my bank with issued me an Amazon Prime Visa that didn't cover the cost of the camera and other things. Then there was the comedy of errors with the delivery. Not Amazon's or the third party company that fulfilled the order. This camera is truly feature-packed professional grade -- and I have the 327-page manual to prove it that cost me $117 at Staples to print (though it does double-duty as a manual for the HC-X2 as well). GOOD TO KNOW: I requested black and white print out because color printing would cost much MUCH more. But when I was handed the manual, I was delighted to see there was some color printing.I don't look forward to lugging this manual to weddings and such, but it's better than lugging a computer with the .pdf manual. Unless you work exclusively in a studio with the HC-X20, you will need a printed manual, or maybe have it on a large-screen smartphone or tablet computer.𝟭𝟲 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮.Most tripods are manufactured with a locking nut for the the QR plate (browse tripods to make sense of the obscure jargon) that is not a simple round shape, but is something designed with an extension "to make it easier" to finger tighten and secure the QR plate to the tripod — and prevent your expensive camera from sliding off the tripod and hitting the ground. The problem is that this locking nut extension butts up against the bottom of the camera making it impossible to properly lock the QR plate — and the expensive camera attached to it — in place on top of the tripod. I must have the camera and QR plate half out of the tripod top in order to use my tripod. I don't know if Panasonic or tripod manufacturers are to blame for this defective design, but there's probably enough blame to go around for all parties involved, and thus I am reducing my five-⭐️ rating to one.The Camera Itself:𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗭𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗢𝗗: 𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗕𝗨𝗬. There is a very thin hollow cylinder of plastic that fits inside of each locking joint of the tripod legs. One of these cheap flimsy plastic cylinders broke nearly in half and fell out of the locking mechanism. I was able to put it back in place, but now I have to extend the tripod legs while it's upside down, or else this cheap brittle plastic piece will fall out: The leg can't be locked if this piece is not in place. If one fails, the others can't be far behind.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗖-𝗫𝟮𝟬 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟰𝗞 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮: 𝘼 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙫𝙚. When it works, it works beautifully. When it doesn't, your footage will be out of focus and either under- or over-exposed: That's not supposed to happen on Auto Mode in bright sunshine or at night with plenty of electric lighting all around. Perhaps it's because I have the focus mode set for face detection and tracking, but when I tried to record crowd scenes at Mardi Gras at night, I ended up with a lot of useless blurry dark footage for my efforts 😡. Use the viewfinder. You can't tell when something's wrong by looking at the LED screen. The manual does double duty mostly for the HC-X2 and HC-X20, but European models are also mentioned on the cover of the manual. It's good at explaining where controls and features are buried in the menu system. But how and under what conditions to use those features, not so much. For that you might have to enroll in Udemy.com or some other online training course. Are there courses specific to the HC-X20? I doubt it. Panasonic just manufactures and sells them: don't expect much training and guidance from them.
