This tool tests power steering fluid by means of light. It basically shines a light in the little tube and reads it on the other end, effectively measuring how dark the fluid is.The average person really has no need for a tool such as this one. It's easier to pull the dipstick out and wipe it with a white paper towel. You'll see how clean or dirty your fluid is immediately.This tool does work great for a shop environment. It gives you a "reading" that you can then show a customer. People like hard data, and this tool could help you sell a service.Even then, most modern vehicles don't even have a power steering fluid reservoir because they now use electric steering racks. There's still plenty of older vehicles being brought into an independent shop, however.As far as build quality, the tool does well. It comes with batteries. The probe is long enough to reach into the reservoir just fine. I'd imagine you would store this tool with a rag over the probe at all times because it's literally being dipped into the fluid every use. I do wish it had a cover for the probe and even a little case for the tool itself would be of great value.
