About this item

  • Size: 1/4 inch X 2 inch
  • Heavy duty wood screw with 6 sided hex bolt head
  • Features deep wood screw threads and does not accept a nut
  • Used in applications where standard wood screws cannot support the load (deck building, etc.)
  • Requires pilot hole to be drilled and installs using wrench or socket tool

Lag screw bolts are used in place of standard wood screws whenever the mounting surface must bear a heavy load. The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

I wanted the full thread these have.. but THAT is its weakness...power screw in close then "hand tighten with ratchet" or the head will "pop off" at the top of the thread... leaving the threaded stud in your project ruining it...MY RECOMMENDATION IS buy a different higher strength product...unless your just hanging plants..

Used to mount casters to shelving. I predrilled all holes. I used a flat washer and split lock washer. I had to stop torqueing as soon as the lock washer was close to flat. Any more torque and the head would shear off. Out of 16 holes, I sheared 6 and had to adjust the location.

I bought these with shelf brackets a the heads broke off when I screwed them into wall studs. They totally F''''ed Up my shelf project. These must be garbage metal with no strength.I would recommend avoiding using these screws.

I just installed 24 of these to attach steel brackets into cedar boards without pilot holes. No splitting, and no stripping. Using a cordless drill with strong torque, no heads broke off or stripped. Tip: Bought these through Amazon Warehouse at a better rate.
