Never was a fan of shoot-thru umbrellas. Always preferred light banks if I needed that wide a light source. This one works quite well outside where a light bank would be a real pain! It's reasonably well made and priced. Will work better with an open bulb but if you're using a hot shoe type flash (Speedlight), use the built-in defuser and set the flash as far back as possible. Take a couple of pics of the dome to see how evenly it is being lit. You can adjust the flash depth from the images you get or maybe if necessary add an extra defuser on the flash head. I just used the built-in on a flashpoint R2 speedlight. Worked out to be a good combo for late afternoon / early evening portraits.

This umbrella is a very effective and reliable alternative to more advanced light modification setups. I use it in high volume, high stress situations where space is tight and setup time (or the lack thereof) is pivotal. I also factor in to my 5 stars that these are inexpensive enough to be replaced at no great cost to you, and I factored that in to my decision to buy them for the current job I'm using them for: 6 months later I have yet to have one break or tear, which is amazing because I really do beat these up and get a lot of use out of them in the most demanding situations, well, most demanding I've had to deal with.I've also used the Westcott brand of the same umbrellas the past for work for another company to do high volume portraits; I honestly see very little difference in image quality between this cheaper brand and the Westcotts.

Wish it was bigger, but otherwise did the job well. I used it for an on site group shot of 14 where the ceiling wouldnt let me use a bounce umbrells. This unit allowed me to maximize the light going forward while giving that more omnidirectional light that a shoot through umbrella gives.

An inexpensive light modifier that produces an amazing well lit image. I am really impressed with this product being a portrait photographer.
