The compact design begins with a 1/4" input and thru-put to feed the on-stage amp. This connects to the custom made Eclipse ET-DB3 transformer which performs the impedance matching and balances the signal. When using extra high output instruments, a -15dB pad can be inserted into the signal path. This enables the SB-2 to be used with active basses and digital pianos that often tend to overload the input side of the interface. An innovative stereo-to-mono merge function provides a convenient way to connect stereo keyboards and computers without having to reset the source for mono operation, saving time and input channels on the PA. The SB-2 output features an XLR wired to the AES standard with pin-2 hot. Once connected, the SB-2 delivers a smooth warm sound reminiscent of older vintage gear. The Eclipse ET-DB3 transformer is magical in its ability to handle extreme signal levels with a natural compression that is pleasing to the ears. The transformer also helps eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops by isolating the input from the output. This is augmented with a ground lift switch that lifts pin-1 on the XLR for quiet, professional results.

Background: I'm a semi-pro bass player and singer. I play to hundreds of people every weekend. Used to do it for a living exclusively. I'm also an I.T. consultant and tube amp audio designer. This direct box is a quality DI that has decent sound. After testing it for a while at home, though, and in several different configurations, I sensed something was missing. So I hooked up my ProDI, and then my JDI, to compare all three. The ProDI and JDI were nearly indistinguishable, as has always been the case. They're also in another league compared to the SB-2. They have a smoothness, coherence, quickness, and clarity from top to bottom that the SB-2 simply does not have. The SB-2 seems to throw a veil over things, making the bottom end sound a bit slow, sludgy, thuddy, and indistinct. It's not all that obvious, though; you have to "go looking for it," as they say. The top end is there, but again, it's not at the quality level provided by the unit's two bigger, more-expensive brothers.Does that mean I dislike the SB-2? Absolutely not. If size and price (and perhaps weight) are prime purchase factors, then clearly the SB-2 is the way to go. It'll give you better sound than, say, an IMP-2. Theoretically, I could do a fly-in gig with just my bass guitar case containing my bass, my strap, my instrument cable, my tuner, and my SB-2 inside it. One thing to carry. That's a big plus. And, as others have already stated, once the music starts and things get loud, especially in the average highly-reflective venue where the acoustics are somewhere between terrible and awful, and especially when people are singing along, no one's going to hear the difference between an SB-2 and a ProDI, or an SB-2 and a JDI.
