This starter works great on my 92 merc 40hp. One thing I would note though is that you absolutely need to lube the bendix before you install it. I didnt at first and it got stuck up the very first time i tried it. I believe the merc manual calls for SAE30 (NOT 10w-30, ,etc). used white lithium grease spray. It seemed to work great. I have bought from Rare Electrical before and wont hesitate to buy from them again.

40 year old starter went out on the water one day and OEM replacements and rebuild kits are not easily accessible and i needed a quick fix. I got this quickly and installed it and got back out on the water. The only issue I have had in the 40 or so trips out with it is that it is quite a bit louder than the OEM.

Starter arrived before estimated arrival date. It did have the top mounting bracket reversed when it arrived. Had to remove the top two bolts and rotate the bracket 180 degrees. Very simple to do. Prior to that I had contacted customer service and they were ready to issue a pre paid shipping label for the return if needed. I mainly wanted them to be aware of the situation so they could give feedback to their supplier. Perfect fit on my 1992 Mercury 60hp outboard. Local Mercury repair shop wanted $195 for the starter so I saved over $120. Winning...

Had to take it apart to rotate the bracket in order to make it fit on my Mariner 40hp Magnum (4 cyl, 2 stroke). Other than that, it was a perfect fit and works flawlessly. I highly recommend this even over a genuine Quicksilver part. After inspecting the innards of this starter due to having to rotate the bracket to make it fit, you can tell this is a quality starter unit (one of the better I've worked with). For the price, you can't go wrong!
