As one commenter said, it would be better as a laser base than cnc. The unit just dangles and the lower end has no support to keep the bit still, but as it moves the bit just digs in. it needs a plate at the bottom like the top mounting bracket.

You definitely get what you pay for. I bought this because I had the other parts to make it whole. I had to reinforce the actuator as I used it for my cnc router. It does say DIY, and this was understood when I purchased it. It looked just like the photo when it arrived, however when I finally got all my other gear on it, it seemed very frail. I did try to do very, very thin cuts with it and found that the bit would catch the wood and then drive the bit down and jam up. The actuator never at one time traveled all the way up or all the way down. I would suggest that if you are in the market for a solid metal z axis, spend the extra money and get one that is solid state, at least if you are using for cnc router. I think it would work ok for laser engraving, but not router. I have since purchased a solid state actuator, just waiting for its arrival.
