It creates the sound of a storm very well. It is small enough to carry in a backpack and big enough to produce the needed volume.

Everyone likes playing with this thing. Getting lots of strange sounds is fun, but it really gives the best thunder sound by just holding it upright and shaking it around. I'm guessing that the diagonal head is used to give it more surface area and thus better sound. It works really well with our in my wife's music studio. The instrument is well built and although I don't worry about the drum itself breaking (even with her young students), I'm not quite as certain about the spring. The spring is attached to a small screw that goes into a collet in the middle of the drum head. It seems to work its way loose pretty easily (you can tell when it gets loose because the sound changes). I've only tightened it by hand so far, thinking that if it's getting shaken too hard that having the screw come loose is better than having the spring break off where it attaches to the screw. It seems plenty strong for now and I really don't see how it could be any better (using a thicker spring probably wouldn't sound as good), so I'm giving it full marks.

Doesn't sound anything like thunder. Spring is too short. Not worth the money. I've heard other spring drums that sound a lot more like thunder, which is what I purchased this for. This is more of a not very great sounding roar.

I don't know who is redesigning the spring drums at remo, but the spring is way too small and attached badly to the drum head. Sounds weak
