As a cheap cassette player that will take you back to the 80s or the 90s in a nostalgic way, this device is good enough to cover the basics. It even offers some extras, such as a USB connection to digitize audio, a direction switch to play the reverse side of a tape without removing it, and a mode switch to start playing the B-side when the A-side finishes. The sound quality is average, not as good as expensive Japanese brands of the period, but good enough to enjoy listening in stereo. There are no drivers required or recording software provided. The player is detected as an audio device automatically, and you are directed to download the very popular "Audacity" software for recording to PC. Audacity is a very capable multi-platform digital audio editor that's also free and open-source.At a high level, I notice some missed opportunities here. For example, while adding a USB-C connector, why not also add a rechargeable battery so that the same (or a second) connection will be used to power the device, making the use of AA batteries unnecessary? Maybe offer a Bluetooth connection, so that you can use it with wireless headphones and link to portable speakers? A couple more bucks to spend on buttons and shell, so that it looks more professionally designed and doesn't look like a child's toy? I think most people would be happy to pay the price difference to get these extras. On the other hand, why bother if all you'll be doing is occasional listening to a few tapes left in your old chest? This might be all you need. Still, I would have preferred to have the option so I could offer a stronger recommendation.
