About this item

  • These superb bevel edged chisels are named after the founder of Narex Bystrice, Mr Vaclav Richter. Launched to celebrate the centenery of the company
  • Made from a new type of carbon steel alloyed with chromium for enhanced hardenability and vanadium for grain reduction and enhanced toughness, the steel is heat treated using a cryogenic process to maximise the formation of the desirable martensite crystalline microstructure in the finished steel.
  • The chisels are fitted with traditional pattern handles from Mr Richter's time, made from ash for lightness and strength, extremely smoothly finished and secured with a split-proof ground steel ferrule bearing the Richter logo and smartly trimmed with a thin leather bolster. The chisels are supplied coated with a light corrosion inhibiting oil with VCI protection for each individual chisel to ensure that they reach you in perfect condition.
  • Available in seven sizes: 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" and 1-1/2"

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Narex has developed the RICHTER chisel line, which are certainly one of the best tools ever produced by a renowned Czech manufacturer. Combining the highest quality materials with professional quality of workmanship, these are well-made chisal. The blades are made of chrome-vanadium steel, tempered to Rc62 and subjected to cryogenic treatment to harden steel without causing its brittleness. Later finishing and polishing sanding ensure a high-quality glossy surface finish. Slanted grinding at an angle of 24 is more suitable for precision and medium hard and soft wood processing. If a larger angle is needed, as is usually the case with hardwood processing or vigorously hitting the chisel with a hammer, it is easy to apply the second phase to the first. In order to ensure the distance from the side walls necessary to work in narrow cavities, the thickness of the blade narrows from the front to the back. Made to strict specifications, they are flat sanded with an accuracy of 0.1 mm along the first 2/3 of the blades measuring from the top and sharpened to the sharp edge, which requires only light honing before use. The ridge of the chisel is sanded very evenly and requires very little effort to get a perfectly flat chisel back. The handle is made of European ash, which is an excellent choice for this purpose due to its hardness, strength and beautiful hair removal. The handle has an ergonomic shape and is carefully sanded. The handle has a convenient, profiled shape and convex end, which is resistant to chipping as a result of hammering. It is equipped with leather cushioning pad and thick ring made of solid stainless steel.

It's sharp and holds that edge. It's well balanced and the handle, if you want one, is comfortable (I thought I ordered it without the handle, I meant to anyway). Not cheap, but few quality items are.

Not the top of the line in chisels but this was an addition to a set I have of the same brand and I've had good luck with them. To me sharp is all that matters with a chisel, sharpen it correctly and it'll give you great service.

i have an old set (30 years old) of Marple chisels with blue plastic handles and lately have gotten into cutting dovetails. Thought I could improve my skill level with a better set of chisels, not really. I have sharpened my Marple chisels with 1,000 diamond stone, 4,000 & 8,000 Japanese water stones but I had nothing to compare them to. Out of the box the Narex Richter chisels are polished on the back side but not as flat or polished as my Marples were after I sharpened them. Compared the two on some Ash and found my Marples cut better than the Narex. I then sharpened the Narex chisels the same as the Marples and they did a better job but only as good as the Marples, no better. Well at least I know now....

You will be hard pressed to find better chisels at a better value. These chisels are 1/10 the price of Japanese chisels of the same quality and sheerness and edge retention. Will be purchasing an entire set soon.

SEE UPDATE BELOWThis is a premium tool with excellent construction, design, and material selections.Your number one consideration should be edge retention. For a review on this, allow me to refer you to a certain youtube channel Wood by Wright. Watch his chisel comparison videos, check his data. You will learn that NO chisel steel stands up to chopping very hard woods like this one. It is a close race in some situations and if you're only working with softer wood, you may find other steels will perform the same slightly better. All around, though, The Narex Richter edges out all others. Some of which are 2-3x the cost. The balance, feel, fit, finish, polish of the specimen I received are impeccable. It came sharp but not crazy sharp. This is to be expected because regular honing is part of normal chisel usage. My main complaint, and this is a weak one, would be the lack of a back ferrule. There is no back ferrule to keep the wood handle from checking when hammered; so in order not to deform or dent the pretty handles, I will be sure to hit them only with soft-blow mallets. I believe there are 2 reasons why Narex decided they can get away with this design choice.#1 The wood species of the handle is ash, an incredibly impact resistant wood. Baseball bats and hockey sticks are commonly made of ash.#2 There is a leather bushing between the front socket/ferrule to absorb some impact.Overall, I am highly pleased with this tool and will not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.Thank you taytools for importing these from the Czech Republic.Shipping wasn't free but the packaging was perfect and delivery was fast, so that's fair enough.UPDATE 1 ----------------I have since acquired several more of the chisels and upon sharpening, I noticed that the backs on all but 1 were far from flat. When checking the back with a machinist's square, you notice that the backs are convex. This is an unacceptable defect for a high-end tool. Even a cheap marples has better flatness than these.Literature shipping with the tools claims that they are ground flat to their smallest production tolerances. This is either false or their production tolerances are questionable.Convex back means the flat side of the chisel has a belly. This is sooo hard to straighten out by hand because even with a perfect lapping film, you are dealing with a tool that will rock along the face being worked on, which means you aren't grinding along the belly only, but will take swipes across the low spots as well.UPDATE 2 ----------------I got in touch with TayTools about back flatness tolerance. They could not provide any figures; but they offered to refund the chisels upon return, this was months after purchase. I have increased my rating to 4 stars for this gesture.

I bought the entire set based on the research by Wood by Wright. (See YouTube). I have not been disappointed. They are great chisels. Appear to be well made. They sharpen easily and hold an edge.
