What harm can a little dust do?
By the time you see that fine layer of dust on top of your scanner, you can be certain at least 3 times that amount of dust has been sucked in thru the vents and holes outside, settling into the internal components used to run the scanner itself. While you can wipe that dust on top away, the dust inside just keeps building up in a thickening layer and sticking to the electronics inside by static charge. As it builds, it will definitely become dangerous -- causing your scanner to run at high temperatures, and by then, the damage will be done. Overheating is the actual "cause of death" in most electronic items.
In addition, dust accumulation is very bad for photo scanners and printers; the last thing you want is for a lot of dust to collect on your scanner and then make its way onto to your photo while it is scanning.
What can I do to extend the life of my scanner?

I had my cover modified at an alteration shop to allow the power and USB cables to remain plugged into the scanner with the cover on.

Nice snug fit for scanner and single slide feed. Will not fit with film feeder inserted. Very well made and finished. Impressed enough that I got a custom printer and flat-bed cover

I'm surprised that Nikon did not think of it in a first place. It's a must have accessory for your scanner. In order to use it, you must have slide adapter plugged in. It doesn't fit with film/negative strips Adapter.

Fits the basic machine well, but is not big enough to cover the slide holder, as it protrudes out of the front. But no problem, I just swap it out for the slide scanner, which sits flush with the front of the scanner and fits under the cover.

La poussière peut devenir gênante quand on fait un travail de numérisation. Elle peut s'accumuler à l'intérieur de l'appareil et ensuite se déposer sur le film ou la diapo. l'absence de poussière est essentielle dans un travail de numérisation. La housse est une bonne protection.
