The RG series of pickups is specifically designed to fit "dobro" style spider bridge resonator guitars. For biscuit bridge guitars, use the Schatten NR series pickups. For tricone resonator guitars, use the Schatten TC series pickups. Schatten has produced a resonator guitar pickup that met their exacting standards for faithful sound reproduction, ease of installation, great anti-feedback characteristics, and so much more. Innovative Design Until Schatten designed the RG-03, all resonator pickups were either stuck onto the side of the cone (which invariably caused feedback issues) or else required the replacement of large parts of the resonator assembly (not to mention a lot of expense and probable modification to the instrument). There also were some magnetic pickups that were meant to fit under the strings at the end of the fingerboard - but these were never particularly acoustic sounding. The design of the RG-03 mounts the piezo element directly on center on the underside of the resonator cone on 'Dobro' style single-cone instruments. This placement of the piezo unit is the best for sound and the best for feedback resistance. Schatten knows this because it is their design. Their competitors know this as well because in bringing out their own reso pickup, they copied most of Schatten's. Players who will be plugging directly into a 'normal' guitar amp will find that they get great sound quality from the RG-03 in passive form. No preamp should be required in this situation. Players who must plug directly into a mixing board will most likely need to preamp their signal in order to match up with what most mixers require in terms of impedance and signal strength. If you wish to have the electronics and battery on board the instrument then you should be purchasing the 'A' or Active model of the RG-03 that includes the Artist II preamp, which can be externally powered, or use the external Schatten Preamp/DI.

Feeds back easily and is not strong enough. Needs a preamp to run with magnetic pickups.

In installed according to the directions. Recording through the pickup alone sounded very good, but the live acoustic sound was dead. I only plug in once in a while, so I removed it and put in a Fishman Classic.

I installed this pickup myself on my Gold Tone Paul Beard Signature Squareneck Resonator guitar. Followed the instructions religiously and it works perfectly. Plugged it into my Fischman Loudbox Mini and it sounds great, even better than when I mike it with my Shure SM57 microphone. At this price, the Schatten RG-03 passive resonator pickup is a real bargain.

On the plus side it works great but, when installed per instructions the sound acoustic is greatly muffled

I received my pickup very quickly in the mail. I found the instructions simple to follow with some attention paid to detail. I had it installed in about an hour and a half. I was pleasantly surprised at the full and true sound. I would buy another Schatten product in a heartbeat!

I initially had this passive pickup installed by a local dobro maker. He noted that there was very little output and re-installed it further down into the cone using 1/8 inch of putty rather than the recommended 3/8 inch. This produced a little better volume but created a very tinny sounding treble. On the chance that the pickup was defective, I requested another one. The supplier Blue Star Music immediately sent a new one. This one I installed myself with 3/8 inch of putty - an easy swap out. The output was still very low but the treble sounded much better. I ran it through a Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. with the gain way up and the treble down a bit. For the price, it sounds fine.If you decide to do the installation yourself be aware that the cone is made of very soft metal. Any pressure whatsoever will create a dent.

I have a Wechter/Scheerhorn squareneck with the RG-03 installed. The Schatten gives me a well-controlled sound in an instrument that is typically a nightmare to amplify. Thanks, Schatten! Here's a link to their site: [...]
