This crap really works. Or it was because it’s been raining everyday. Going to over-seed with it.

I'd like a refund for this useless product!..The seeds did not sprout and the fertilizer burned my good grass! It is now a few days later from my original comment and actually seeds finally started sprouting! I upped this product to 3 stars from 1 star!

I have used this product for many years. It works. I usually mow my lawn to about 2 inches then spread the seed out over the lawn. My lawn isn't sparce but it's kind of like an overseed. Comes with seeds, dirt and fertilizer. Do it when you expect rain then you don't have to water it in. My lawn is the best on the block because of Scott's and Turf builder fertilizer. Buy a small bag first and see if it works. Good luck!

We had a very rainy spring, and I was having drainage issues in my yard with a few spots that needed regrading. I could not seed with all the rain, because prior experience told me that midweat storms just wash away seed. When the weather was looking clearer, I set up one of the spots. When I realized a heat wave was coming, I figured I only had enough time to set up one area, and I would have to wait until fall for the other one. I bought a bag of Scott's from another venue for that area only.Once I realized the sprinkler would hit both spots anyway, I decided to go ahead and buy this product and overseed the spots in between with it as well. I had already smothered the existing grass with cardboard for a few weeks, so I went out early on a hot day to till. It took me a few hours and a lot of energy and sweat to make sure the area was leveled correctly and free of any remaining weeds or grasses. A few days after I seeded, I noticed grass popping up already, and got a little worried, as fescue takes longer. After a week or so or watering 3 times a day in 90-100 degree temps, the entire area was covered in something that is NOT fescue. It was a thick fast growing crabgrass like grass (see photos). I was afraid weed seeds came over from the neighbors, but there were no other spots that were sprouting this grass. The first spot was growing pretty well with only a couple weeds, and nothing that looked like this. Only the newly seeded area, some spots in between where I overseeded and a neighboring garden were sprouting this uncontrollable mess. I do not know how this happened, as others have clearly got good results and posted fescue photos, but my bag clearly did not have the right seed. I have never been so frustrated. After spending so much time and money watering (and wasting precious water), I am going to have to smother and dig up the whole thing again or hope that weed killer gets it, and start all over in the fall. I have not got my water bill yet, but I can only estimate that I would have been better off splurging on sod. I really want to scream.

UPDATE 1/29/2020: I bought a 3rd bag to finish replacing the rest of the crabgrass in the backyard. This product has worked well.UPDATE 1/4/2020: Grass has been growing well after I learned the watering schedule. It is also important to note (and the instructions don't mention this) that temperature must be above 65F for the grass to germinate in 1-2 weeks. So, during the California winter where temperatures dipped to below 60F, I did not see new grass grow as abundantly as in August/September. When applying these grass seeds, do NOT use any "weed controls, especially crabgrass preventers" in the treated areas, according to the manufacturer. I bought ANOTHER bag (at full price) to complete another large part of the backyard.ORIGINAL REVIEW from 9/2019:Crab grass... the uncomfortable type of "grass".I have crab grass that's been filling up our entire backyard ever since we bought our home six years ago. Crab grass grows fast and is an invasive weed. Because it's weed, I learned that you can slowly kill crab grass by watering less often and deeper into the soil so that only good grass' roots can get water. With that in mind, I wanted to put that knowledge to the test by ripping out some large portions of crab grass from the back yard. (TIP: water the soil a bit so it's easier to rip the crab grass out)Once the ground was bare soil, I loosened it up a bit and pulled out any remaining crab grass/dead weed. Next, I sprinkled this Scotts Turf Builder onto a small section to see what would happen. NOTHING GREW. I was disappointed. Then I read the instructions on the packaging:1. Spread the seeds/fertilizer into the ground2. Loosen/turn the soil3. Water daily as needed to keep the soil moist for the first 2 weeksI changed my sprinkler to water every 2 days for 5 minutes. End result? Grass grew after a week, and now it has increasingly become fuller! See photos for the results!Once the grass has grown acceptably, I will change the sprinkler system to water less frequently again (but deeper through cycle soaking) in order to starve the crab grass weed of water and to help the new grass establish deeper roots.SUMMARY: water often in the first 2 weeks to help sprout the new grass. Once it's established, water less frequently (but cycle soak) so the new grass grows deeper roots.
