may be helpful for rebuild of primitive PC/MBs (DOS,win3x,win9x,w2k) but cl.10 SD cards very slow when tested w/XP. older MBs require SATA/IDE bridge to complete, size limitations of FAT16/32 persist. use cl.10x8GB and partition.

I purchased this to put in my point-of-entry/router server for my home. For giggles, I tried pfSense on it (not my ultimate goal, just trying it out), and it seemed to dislike pfSense. It may have been something I did, but pfSense began throwing kernel panics mid-configuration.I was intending to put CentOS on it, but CentOS rejected it altogether. I'm not necessarily faulting the adapter, as it could very well be the motherboard (untested prior to this), or some compatibility issue between the aging Opteron motherboard and this converter card.So what I ended up using was Ubuntu Server 10.04, and I am quite pleased. The server is running DNSMasq, LAMP, Samba, and other packages I find quite useful in a single-solution server. My plan was to test the setup with a single converter card, then add a second and third one for RAID5, which I now feel comfortable doing. I'm not sure of the hot-swappability of this converter, and hopefully I won't ever have to test that.Currently using a SanDisk 32GB class10 SD card. The machine boots and loads things quickly, but during installation and really any time I do write-intensive actions such as package updating, it runs significantly slower than a standard HDD. This is certainly NOT an issue when using it in a setup like I have here.

This is an awesome device. I have installed windows OS's from XP to 8 with no issues. I have also installed various versions of Linux and FreeBSD with no issues as well, it operates just as any other normal hard drive would. With that said, if you use cheap SD cards you WILL have problems. I have tried cheap cards in the adapter and have found that I get such results as not being able to boot from it. problems installing an OS and it not being recognized by the BIOS. I have used Sandisk SDHC high speed (30 Mbps) cards with ZERO problems. Those other no name cards might be alot cheaper but poor results will be your reward. The only reason I did not give this item 5 stars, (if I could have given it 4.5 I would have) is because it has no protection. you can't mount it into anything without either wrapping it in some insulating material or what I did, used the mounting holes and mounted it to a piece of electronics perf board. You can't go wrong for the money. Also if you plan on buying one, just buy 2 because once you get the first one and use it you will want at least one more.

I have tried the device in different computers and SD cards and it does not work. The red light comes on, so it has power but it is not seen by any computer. Take a pass on this.

I installed the device with a fresh install of Windows 7. The OS sees the device as a Hard Drive but the OS does not see the SD Media regardless of the media placed in the SD slot. I wasted 3 hours trying to get the device to work to no avail and trashed 3 perfectly working SD cards in the process.

I have been using this in my EEE pc for quite a while now, and it just works. I am using a 16GB Micro SD card with a SD card adapter. I loaded Lubuntu onto the card, popped it into the SATA converter, and it boots up without a glitch. I have considered buying more of these to use as backup SSD drives from my other pc. You can't go wrong with the price!

Packaging was excellent for my two units. As described and am using to test out booting WES7 off of SD for boards that don't have SD native on them.
